Walnut Dominion Creek Rapist/Murderer will die for his actions

"Death Sentence Handed Down in Stabbing Death
Byron Waring in court

Posted: Today at 10:56 a.m.
Updated: 37 minutes ago

Raleigh — Jurors on Monday sentenced a Raleigh man to die for a 2005 stabbing death.

Byron Waring was convicted of first-degree murder on June 28 for fatally stabbing Lauren Redman on Nov. 8, 2005. Jurors deliberated less than three hours before agreeing on the death sentence, and Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner choked up as he handed down the sentence.

Waring's relatives broke down in the courtroom, and Waring, who has shown little emotion during the two-week trial, also appeared shaken as he was led out.

Investigators said Redman was stabbed more than 20 times inside her Raleigh apartment as she begged for her life. But she managing to crawl outside and ask for help before she died.

In a taped confession, Waring said he and another man, Joseph Sanderlin, went to Redman's apartment to collect on a debt owned to her former roommate, George Sasser. He told investigators that Sanderlin raped Redman and that they both stabbed her.

Sanderlin is charged with murder in the case, while Sasser is charged as an accessory after the fact. Both men will be tried later.

Prosecutors said the case warranted the death penalty because of the brutality of the slaying. But defense attorneys argued Waring's life should be spared, blaming his troubled childhood and the influence of those around him for the bad choices he made.

"The evidence was overwhelming. The facts were terrible. The evidence was laid out very clearly for them," Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby said.

The sentence marks the first time in six years that a Wake County jury has sentenced a defendant to death. In 2001, Fernando Garcia received a death sentence for the beating death of Juliann Bolt in the clubhouse of the Cameron Lake Apartments in 2000.

"(A death-penalty trial is) a very difficult thing for everybody. It's an emotional ordeal to prosecute them or to defend them. It's emotionally grueling and draining for the family of the victims, the family of the defendants," said Raleigh defense attorney Karl Knudsen, who wasn't involved in the Waring case.

The sentence also comes as questions about North Carolina's death penalty are tied up in the legal system. Court battles over a doctor's role in the lethal injection process have stopped executions since January.

"I think the law the case was tried under is clear. I think the sentence to death was clear. How the law is carried out is up to the appellate courts," Willoughby said.

Not really - he'll live 20 years in jail on our tax dollars before they ever get around to killing him.

Pretty unjust if you ask me.

Dude, could you please post the source link. One of my ex co-worker's best friend lived in Brier Creek when this happened, so I want to send him a link to a "real" article rather than a TWW post.

beyond the tax dollar thing, i dont see the big deal with letting prisoners get sent to jail for 20 years first. jail isnt that fun, despite what you may have heard, and it helps prevent innocents from getting killed.

Its not an excuse. Nobody is born a killer. They were trying to make the case that he could be rehabilitated.

I still say its complete bullshit to say that he shouldn't die for what he did. I don't care what environment he grew up in, he raped and brutally stabbed a girl to death. It shouldn't take a genius to figure out that this is inexcusably wrong. If he didn't learn that in life, I have trouble believing he's going to because some correctional officer tells him so. Fry his ass.

So its human nature to want to murder people and we have to be conditioned to keep from stabbing someone. Do I have your position right?

Alright, wipe the foam from your mouth. I was just trying to clarify the defense's position. Nobody has said anything about him not deserving to die.

Well if the anaestetic doesn't work on you (some argue you can still feel pain) then you basically die from slow suffication and muscle spasms and can't scream.

no. i don't believe in the death penalty period. but it just seems to be disproportionately doled out to poor and minorities because they can't afford better lawyers. and yes, he is indeed a poor minority.

but yeah, i don't believe in the death penalty because, well, call me crazy, but i don't like the idea of our government killing its own citizens (much less people killing each other in general).

AND your government kills people all the time...innocent people...just because they are citizens of another country doesn't mean they are less worthy.

there's a pretty substantial difference between what he's describing and what you're describing. you're basically describing a psychopath.

there's a big difference between a psychopath and someone who would kill a motherfucker who had it coming to him, were it not for social conditioning and penal action.

"Abolitionists claim that the death penalty is a means of revenge. It is not. One way for the victim's family to get revenge would be to go out and murder a member of the murderer's family in order to get him to experience the same type of suffering he put them through. If the purpose of the state in executing murderers was retribution or revenge, then criminals would be executed in the same way that they murdered their victims. But alas, the point of the death penalty is not to see how much pain can be unleashed on the murderer but to bring him to justice."

And you're only concerned about torture when we can blame America for it, am I right? Wait. . .you still found a way to blame America, didn't you? It's the American society's fault that this guy raped, stabbed, and killed this young woman, right?

^^and what does "bring him to justice" really mean?

to your addendum:
how am i "blaming america"? minorities and the poor are disproportionately put to death.

i believe the death penalty is wrong.

how are either of these things "blaming america"?

^ and what good will that do, beyond just continuing the spiral of violence in our society?

^^ it means whatever you want it to mean. For those who want him to die it means that. For others it means lock him up and work towards a time when people dont kill people for no reason. Justice does not have a basic definition so it cant be used to rationalize execution

and minorities and the poor are put to death more often than upper classes simply because crime rates are higher among these groups and the crimes are usually more brutal.

last time i checked OJ was black not white...he seemed to get off pretty easy

^no, its actually your society that causes such crimes...other countries don't have these problems nearly as much as the US because they have stronger family values...poor or rich.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Justice Department report examining federal prosecutors' handling of death penalty cases has found no intentional racial or ethnic bias, CNN has learned.

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/LAW/06/06/justice.death.garza/

Quote :
"In fact, more white people are executed in this country than black people [emphasis added]. And even if blacks are disproportionately represented on death row, proportionately blacks commit more murders than whites. Moreover, the Supreme Court has rejected the use of statistical studies which claim racial bias as the sole reason for overturning a death sentence."

sometimes it works pretty well. not the elegant solution, but hey...

i'm generally a lukewarm supporter of the death penalty, although i'd like to see some tweaks on how it's implemented. I have no problem with some of these fuckheads being put to death--my concerns are more centered around various imperfections in the system, and the futility of executing the rare handful who are actually rehabilitated.

one thing i actually seriously like to see is that if you serve on a jury and recommend the death penalty, your presence should be legally required--so long as you are still able bodied, etc--as a witness to the execution. Furthermore, one (or more) of the twelve of you should be randomly selected at the time of execution to be responsible for throwing the switch(es). Attach some more personal responsibility to the system...if you aren't serious enough about putting that asshole to death to be comfortable with doing it yourself, you'd better recommend life without parole. If you're REALLY for the death penalty, put your money where your mouth is.
