OK- heres the skinny..... We have an ancient P2 PC in one of our offices that is no longer able to connect to the internet. This old POS has all of our up to date quickbooks files on it.... My book keeper backed up all the files (via QB) on to like 20 floppy discs...

I installed QB on the new PC... When i load it up it gives me the option for "new" or "backup" company profile- I load in the first of the set of floppy's and it does nothing.'

The old PC does not have an ethernet port- SO.........

HOW CAN I TRANSFER ALL OF THE FILES FROM OLD TO NEW QB SO THAT THE NEW PROGRAM IS IDENTICAL TO OLD...????

the more permanent solution if you want to keep using the PC is to buy a $5-$10 pci network card and stick it in

does it not have a USB port on it?

take the harddrive out of the old pc and stick it a different one

Would probably work if we just pulled the HDD huh? I would prefer not to though as I am not so "techy" and would prolly break shit-

OK- So i have ran a USB between them and gone through the process of setting up a local network on both pc's- However, when I click on "my network places" and then -entire network- I cannot pull up the old pc (and vice versa)

because I don't have a jump drive here (nor the time to go get one this second) and figured I would just setup a network and copy over everything (not just QB) at once....


also- it is being fickle-for some reason QB is not like pulling over excel files or similar.... I already have all the files on disc but it won't let me load them onto the new QB- don't know why but googlage tells me it is a common issue.

Any idea why my network with the usb won't work?

if its an old ass P2 I'm going to guess that it doesn't have 2000/XP, which means that a driver installation will probably be necessary if he wants to use a thumb drive (even if you have 2000, you might still have to install a driver). Not a huge deal, and actually that might be the easiest way to go. What OS is it running ncemt?

so keep in mind there are two different types of Quickbooks company files you'll see. One is a .QBW file. Thats the actual company file, where all the data is stored. Theres also .QBB files, which the accountant probably put on 20 disks (that shit will never work, i dont know what they were thinking...one of those disks will probably break).

The best way to do it would be to get that QBW file from the C:/programfiles/intuit/quickbooks folder or to open QB to create another .QBB backup file (it'll be much smaller that the qbw file) and transfer that to the new system. It sounds like hooking it up to the network and transferring it over the network isn't working for whatever reason, so if you can't get the flash drive thing working then it'll be best to get a professional in there to take it from there. When dealing with files as important as QB files you'll want to make sure its done right...I assume theres no current backup right?

if you want to try using the 20 discs, are you going to file-restore backup or whatever in quickbooks to restore the company backup? then it asks you where the .qbb file is? if that process isn't working whats the error message you're getting?

ok- the files she "backed up" were the .qbw files.... when i open QB on the new pc it asks for the .qbb file-

the old pc is running 98 still... I'll try the .qbb and see if that works out- will that be "everything" or will i need the .qbw shit as well?

the .qbb file contains everything you need...it has all the same stuff as the qbw its just compressed. so try creating a qbb, see if you can transfer it via floppys or buy a cheap ass thumb drive...but make sure it includes a driver disc since you'll need it for Win98.

haha- thats the kicker.... I found a thumbrive in my lappy case but don't have a driver disc- Since i'm not online on the P2 i can't download it- gonna try a floppy if it won't fit then I am going to finish networking them and squable from there.

do yourself a favor and update all that shit, there is no reason nowadays to have anything less than a p4. What do you do... fire that thing up when you leave at night so it might be up and running by the morning? I remember backing up 30meg .qbb files to a zip drive, that used to piss me off and it took 2 min. usb drives are the only way to go
