I just got done with "Unforgiven" and someone explain why this is such a great movie. I've only seen about 2 or 3 other Westerns (pretty much despise the genre) but I decided to give this movie a chance since I always hear people recommend it. I have "Good, Bad, and Ugly" on my list but I really dread watching it.

i used to not really be into eastwoodbut then i watched A Fistful Of Dollars after seeing Yojimbonow i think his spaghetti stuff is great (especially when it's not on crap and croptacular AMC...viva la TCM)and the music gets me all pumped up[Edited on July 8, 2007 at 10:45 PM. Reason : +]

The Great Silence is a good one.Klaus Kinski + Morricone score + snow instead of desert = awesomeit is a little more depressing than most other westerns I've seen, but I liked it a lot

Once Upon a Time in the WestButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid[Edited on July 8, 2007 at 10:49 PM. Reason : .]

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is my favorite western ever, its such a great film. You should watch Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns: Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, along with Once Upon a Time in the West.Other great westerns are Peckinpah's Wild Bunch and Eastwood's High Plains Drifter
7/8/2007 10:52:03 PM
I thought the same thing about "unforgiven" it does not deserve 1/100th of the acclaim it getson the other hand i think its safe to say that most old westers are worth watching"good bad & the ugly" is really goodalot of john wayne movies are really good too,
7/8/2007 10:57:44 PM
I'll try a lot of Sergio Leone stuff (along with GB&U) since he's the big name in the genre.
7/8/2007 10:58:24 PM
Another really good western is The Proposition, it came out last year.
7/8/2007 11:05:35 PM
High Noon is fantastic. It stars Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Lon Chaney Jr (old black and white Wolfman), Lloyd Bridges (Jeff Bridges' father), and a young Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes from Good Bad and the Ugly)Magnificent Seven if you're a fan of The Great Escape
7/8/2007 11:06:41 PM
I'm not much for John Wayne. And if you've seen Seven Samurai, then you already know how Magnificent Seven ends.

I love all things Kurosawa and I remember spooky recommending The Proposition at one point so I'll check that out. High Noon is one of the Westerns I've actually seen (it was part of my goal to watch all of the imdb top 250 movies at one point) but I didn't care for it.Wasn't Unforgiven supposed to be an anti-Western or Eastwood was wanting to end Western films with that film? Am I remembering that right. [Edited on July 8, 2007 at 11:16 PM. Reason : grrr]

I don't really like westerns either, but The Magnificent Seven is by far the best. DO NOT bother with the shitty sequels. Lynard Bernstein made that movie even though it had very quality acting.

7:10 to Yuma looks like its gonna be a great movie
7/9/2007 12:41:43 AM
the only westerns i really like are Sergio Leone westerns. i thought Unforgiven wasn't that great either.also, check out Open Range. the gun fight scene at the end is worth the price of admission alone.
7/9/2007 12:45:34 AM
The obvious choices (Once Upon a Time in the West, the Leone/Unnamed man (Eastwood) trilogy) are all great, but I think my favorite western, and I'm not even sure if I would count it as a western, is Jeremiah Johnson starring Robert Redford. It's based on a true story. It's probably in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.
7/9/2007 6:08:11 AM
I liked Unforgiven. Tombstone, Hang 'em High, and all of the "man with no name" eastwood flicks are good.

You need to see The Wild Bunch. Badassery at its finest. As far as recent westerns go:I'll second The Proposition. It's pretty damn amazing. The Quick and the Dead is worth watching if only for the novelty of seeing a western that was directed by Sam Raimi.Seraphim Falls came out on dvd recently and stars Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson kicking the shit out of each other. Its not a perfect movie and once you get over the fact thats its two Irish guys starring in an American western its very entertaining. Has at least 3 "holy shit" scenes in it.
7/9/2007 9:13:37 AM
oh yea, sorry, 3:10 to Yuma...its been a while since I saw the trailer
7/9/2007 12:09:54 PM

Madman lost his damn mind in the west...
7/9/2007 12:39:08 PM
Tombstone FTW.
7/9/2007 12:52:45 PM
I'll second Lonesome Dove. It's seriously underrated and virtually unknown, and is one of my favorite westerns. I'd possibly rate it the best.
7/9/2007 1:02:01 PM
virtually unknown by our generationhttp://us.imdb.com/title/tt0096639/
7/9/2007 1:05:55 PM

lonesome dove is not virtually unknown newbie(yes i know that was like two years ago)let's add DEAD MAN to the mix
1/12/2010 10:11:52 AM
anyway, that's not the reason i had this thread bumped. I've gotten on a big Westerns kick lately. This time, more so with John Wayne's westerns. I think it began upon reading about the True Grit remake which got me interested and so i started pulling out some John Wayne movies. Let's get a good John Wayne discussion going, what's everyone's favorite Wayne western? I'd still say The Searchers for me. Will probably watch Angel and the Badman or Stagecoach tonight, some early Wayne.[Edited on January 12, 2010 at 10:29 AM. Reason : not worth getting sidetracked]

I think this movie killed the remake of 3:10 along with Appaloosa or any new western out.
1/12/2010 11:39:08 AM
The Searchers yo, movie made me hate native americans when I was a little kid.
1/12/2010 1:43:52 PM
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
1/12/2010 2:06:43 PM
Unforgiven is really cool after watching older Eastwood stuff like The Outlaw Josey Wales just because it directly shoots down so much of the older western bravado that they were full of.
1/12/2010 2:33:03 PM
I've got The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. in my netflix queue.
1/12/2010 7:07:56 PM

1/12/2010 9:23:44 PM
^^Great film.

The 3:10 to Yuma remake is one of the very few times where I will recommend the modern version over the original. I luuuuuuuurved the new one!The Magnificent Seven is also a pillar of not just Westerns but cinema in general. And yes, it's just a remake of a Japanese movie about samurai. Don't ever ever ever ever never not in a bajillion years waste your time on the sequels though. Ever.
1/13/2010 1:45:45 AM
The 3:10 to Yuma remake is OKAY until the last 20 minutes, at which point it becomes HORRIBLE.
1/13/2010 2:49:00 AM
^ Totally agree about 3:10 to Yuma--great film.

Appaloosa is decent, but held back by the abomination that is Renee Zellwegger.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - The best John Ford film.Once Upon a Time in the West - Leone's best filmThe Ox-Bow Incident - Just awesomeThe Gunfighter - Hidden gem of a westernRed River - Howard Hawks at his bestI think Unforgiven and Appaloosa are good for modern westerns. The Assassination of Jesse James is an amazing film.
