I have had zero problem with dreamhost for the past few months, before that it was a very minor downtime. I have about 10 domains hosted on it at this time. MUCH more reliable than Verio every thought it could be.

i have a 1&1 account right now and was wondering it it was worth switching to host the new project i'm going to work on
7/2/2007 8:45:32 PM
what factors have made you consider switching from 1&1? switching from 1&1 to dreamhost (or any other provider really) might just be a lot of work and a potential pain in the butt for what will probably be marginal improvementdreamhost had a number of problems in the last 6-9 months or so, though I haven't had too many problems in the last 3 months and seen a few improvements. But the problems from before kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. dreamhost is ok for joe schmoe's personal project site, but if you want any kind of serious site or expecting any major traffic or traffic spikes, dreamhost has shown itself to be kinda risky. there was a similar discussion on scobleizer a while back[Edited on July 2, 2007 at 8:57 PM. dreamhost looks pretty good as far as reviews and such.. i have zero knowledge about 1&1.i actually just opened an account with lunarpages this past friday, and my new domain was ready to go the next day. among the other hosts i researched, they didn't have the tons of bad reviews that i saw with others. for the price and the #'s it's great, but i can only vouch for my experiences the past couple days, which is obviously very limited. you can get lunarpages coupons too... i used a 28% off one, google will point the way if you want to look at that.

just the weird naming scheme for 1&1's ftp system and the lack of cpanel was the only thing reallyi've never really put much of a load on the only site i have hosted on therethe site i'm going to start on is a document generator/webpage generator/online task manager/any other things i can think up kinda thing that i'm just doing to see if i can do it - basically an online toolset and storage area for crap i'd use personally and i'll let others use it if they wanti'm not expecting too much load unless it gets populari was wondering if dreamhost gave any significant server control (httpd, htaccess, etc.) and/or php control (php.ini)?

1&1their setup is definitely...unique... but honestly you can still do ANYTHING. I haven't found a thing yet in terms of crazy configuration shit that they wont let me do on my own.

go with mine... cpanel for the web hosting plan... 350gb storage, 3500 bandwidth... with 28% off it was ~$68 for a year sign up total, with free domain reg

I've had dreamhost for the past year and I'm pretty happy with the hosting.I don't know if this was ever answered in any of the previous hosting threads, but does anyone know if you can apply dreamhost coupons when renewing hosting?

mediatemple is pretty great, used them for years

I have both dreamhost and 1&1.I like 1and1 for its domain managing system, and new domains are only 6 bucks I think, where as at dreamhost they are 10 bucks. So, if you are going to get a bunch of domains, use 1and1.However, dreamhost is super flexible, and I like it for the amount of options and installs that it gives you for different features. Unlimited mysql, nice package installs such as wordpress, mediawiki, ect.So, I use dreamhost for all my hosting, and 1and1 for all my domain managing.

hmm that's right, 1&1 has a mysql limit, doesn't itcrap, i forgot about that
