Has anyone else noticed the influx of advertisements to cruises in Antarctica? I cannot imagine why on earth someone would go on an antarctic cruise for their vacation.
6/29/2007 2:09:30 PM
^^ Yeah pretty ridiculous. You have to zoom out for like 5 minutes before seeing anything, lol.^ Because it's somewhere unique. It may not be a relaxing "getting away from it all," but you sure as hell are getting away from it all if you go there. Can you imagine standing on that island, it must be humbling to think how far you are from any sort of civilization at that moment.
6/29/2007 2:12:20 PM
^ yeah i agree, just the simple fact that it's so far away from humans makes it worth it. If i had money like that to throw around then i'd visit.

To be a little bit more realistic, I would have to pick Yellowstone. Being able to see the animals in their natural habitat is awesome. In fact, after being there and then visiting a zoo makes me so sad. The animals just look so unhappy. On top of that, it's crazy to think about Yellowstone as a supervolcano. Everytime you go, it could be different, the environment is constantly changing. And....if it was to ever explode, millions of people could die. Just crazy to think about.....especially with it being so close.

In terms of tropical areas, I would want to visit the Cocos Islands:
6/29/2007 3:47:41 PM
This is about 6 degrees north

^What is that place called? This is the farthest I've ever been from home, the Grand Cayman:Pretty lame, eh...[Edited on June 29, 2007 at 4:00 PM. Reason : ]

actually, I think it was misplaced and the coordinates were mapped to 6 degrees north of Bouvet Island. In short, I have no idea where this place is.[Edited on June 29, 2007 at 4:00 PM. Reason : .]

Cocos Islands look pretty awesome

Just out of curiousity, what is it about tropical islands that make the water clear at the beach? How come some islands have sandy water and some don't? I'd assume its the waves but why wouldn't waves hit the island in some places where it would in others?
6/29/2007 4:15:45 PM
water is always clear (unless it's dirty or full of minerals or something)how blue/green/brown it appears generally depends on how deep it is and what the surface underneath it is. In the picture above, everywhere it is really light blue is probably only a couple feet deep, and has really white, fine-grained sand underneath
6/29/2007 4:18:12 PM
Well how come you only ever see it on islands though? Why never at a mainland beach?
6/29/2007 4:19:40 PM
tropical/warm water is clear/blue because"-there is a temperature gradient between water near the surface and deep water--this causes minerals to circulate to the surface less---this leads to a poor environment for microorganisms to grow in----the lack of microorganisms makes the water non-brownish

What, Bouvet Island? No. I actually just figured out it was mentioned in the movie today.

^^ If it's the island I'm thinking of, I know how she got there. She went aboard a charted "explorer" ship. They landed on the island via zodiac. Her's flipped over in the 20 foot seas. She has pictures of her in the water thanks to a fellow passenger. She said the only thing there is a protected bird nesting area and the grave of some long dead explorer. Apparently, to "properly" visit the island (I don't know if it's actually a legal requirement) you have to pour a bottle of scotch over the explorer's grave. That may be a different island. I'll have to ask her when she gets back from who knows what county she's in at the moment. I don't know how she affords all the travel, but I can tell you it can't be from my rent.[Edited on June 30, 2007 at 1:28 AM. Reason : not enough ^s]
