i'm coming from rocky mount through greenville to emerald isle (i've got to pick someone up). normally i take 301 to 258 to 58 which takes me through kinston, trenton, maysville, etc. i looked up directions and it looks like i have 3 options:1. through new bern - down 43/17 and on 70 after new bern. turning on 9 foot road near havelock to get back down to 24, then onto the island on 58. 91.1 miles & 2h 26m 2. through kinston - down 11 to kinston, then my usual route down 58. 90.9 miles & 2h 24m3. google route - down 11 to grifton, east on 118 and down to 55 then onto 17 till pollocksville, and finally 58 the rest of the way. 89.1 miles & 2h 14mall of the times and mileage i got from google maps. i am more inclined to go through kinston b/c that is what i am used to. my dad says to go through new bern. has anyone been these routes to compare them (traffic, 2 vs 4 lanes, etc)?

My In-laws make a similar trip routinely and they always go the New Bern route. I don't know how it compares to the others though.

i forgot to add that i will also be driving my boss' kids as a favor (she's flying to a meeting in manteo then to beaufort to meet us in EI for another conference)...so i really don't want to get turned around somewhere. i'm very good with directions, i just don't want to take any chances.

from greenville I always take 11 to kinston, stop at NSS, then take 58, don't forget the shortcut into maysville, then back onto 58 for the final leg

yeah i always stop at neuse and take snake road b/w trenton and maysville. the kids would probably like neuse too. okay, we're going through kinston then.

YAY KINSTON!
6/26/2007 10:46:30 AM
probably won't be stopping for bbq though, sorry. we live in rocky mount so bbq isn't that big of a deal...it's everywhere here.
6/26/2007 10:47:24 AM

I always go through New Bern, but I live right off of HW43 on the Vanceboro side of G'ville.

cafe is only open in the a.m. I think they close at about 11. best breakfast EVER.
6/26/2007 11:45:34 AM
go through kinston and hop the normal route.
6/26/2007 11:47:20 AM
Im from rocky mount too, it sucks doesn't it?anyway, I would go through Kinston. US 70 past New Bern all the way to Morehead is stoplight hell and can take a longgggg time if traffic is bad/you hit all the lights.

there's some cut-through street right around havelock off of 70E (past a bojangles, turn right at a hess station) that carries you right down to 24W (turn right again). Quickest way to EI that I have been (coming from kinston). when I lived in Kinston, I'd either go that way or go through trenton/maysville etc but that way got too boring and the ride through those towns at 35mph sucked.[Edited on June 26, 2007 at 1:56 PM. I just did this EXACT same trip last weekend. We went the google way and took us 3 1/2 hours to get there, go thru new bern, easiest and by far the quickest. gl.
