ok, well my parents have had this VW convertible beetle since 1974. Thats the year by the way. The engine has been rebuilt and in my opinion, it has come to need some more maintenance. Although some of it you just have to deal with and in my opinion we need to just buy a new motor. Its the smaller 1600 cc engine and wouldnt be much more then $2000.any advice or comments on where to look for a good engine

2k for an air cooled vdub engine? lawl. you could get a built long block for that much.ask optmusprimer, i think he's about to pull a good running stock motor out of his in favor of something better.

Yeah $2k is waaaaaaaay too much for that motor.Check out the http://www.samba.comAnd locally there are several places that specialize in air cooled VW's, and they probably have something laying around, aircooled shops always seemto

^^a long block is a mostly assembled engine, minus accessories, carb, etc.a short block is only the block and the rotating assembly. no intake, heads, etc.^square backs are hot. i have many a fond memory as a kid bouncing down muddy trails in one with a jon boat strapped on top going to remote fishing spots with my dad and one of his friends (it was his). i swear that car went alot of places a 4wd wouldn't have. ^yeh no kidding. rear engine RWD ftw.when i had it we lived in a neighborhood and the only road out was uphill. one time it snow/iced real bad and i swear i was the only car who made it out. my family and i fully restored the interior, did some body work (i crashed a lot back then, 16), and had it all ready for paint when we had to move and sell it. I sold it to my friend cheap cuz he was broke and not a month later he totalled it.
