I'm going out there with a friend, and he claims "it's a great fishing area", but, the surroundings are a bit beggared. We're getting a great deal on the motel that we're going to, but will the potential fun outweigh another area that's less sketchy and a greater expense?

i dunno about "Newport" ... maybe you mean "Newport News"?

if so, that place was a shit hole last i was there, although that was 10 years ago or so. the town is essentally a huge US Navy shipyard, so you got a bunch of squids and jarheads and shipbuilders running around swordfighting each other over any gal who might give them the time of day.

if all youre gonna do is fish, then yeah, im sure you'll have fun. if youre looking for nightlife, then youre gonna be

unless.. your idea of "nightlife" includes lots of pool, darts, and barfights.

Yeah, Newport News was pretty crappy last time i was there (last year from may-december). Basically still is everything he^^^ said. Although they have nicer parts now that would resemble a modern, less ghetto city, the nightlife still ain't much. Va beach might have some nightlife worth your time, but I wouldn't bank on it. The fishing up there is pretty good though, and there's always busch gardens/ water country usa.

Newport News is cool if you go up for an airshow at NAS Oceana. Take the US harbor tour, the maritime museum is pretty fucking cool as well.

The airshows are sweet in the evening, they'll do high speed passes over the beach under full burner.
