What is the deal with auditing a class? Do you do it if you're just interested in the subject but don't want the pressure of being graded?

or if you fuck up early on before the drop date so you decide to audit the class learn the info, then go back the next semester to take it for a grade.I have taken Tennis 1 and Tennis 2 as audits b.c i had my 200 level PE but wanted to learn how to play tennis

You're interested but don't need the credits and don't want to worry about grades.

it is a great way to learn something that you are interested in but dont need to graduate with out the stress of grades

When I took Scuba a few kids Audited it. They didnt need the PE requirement, but wanted to get certified without having to pay as much.

Yes, that is exactly why you do it: want to learn without the pressure of being graded. I did it once in graduate school. I had completed my coursework for the degree but a new class came along that I knew would be excellent in preparing me for my comprehensive exams. I wanted the content of the course, but not the pressure. You get more out of it, the more you put into it (do the readings, come prepared to class, participate).Keep in mind, professors can put requirements on audits just like they can on regular classes. Most only require you come and listen and participate, but sometimes there is more if you are really to get something out of the class. In my example above, I had to write two of the three papers required for the class (because those papers were designed to promote class participation and since participation was part of the audit, I had to do them, but it was good).Go for it if you are interested in it. Just remember, here it counts as "0" hours so be aware for housing, financial aid, health insurance purposes if you need to be full-time.

Do audits show up on your transcript? There are a few classes I am thinking about auditing but if they don't show up I will take them credit-only. Thanks!

They Show up as "AU" meaning successful audit, or an "NR" meaning no recognition of the audit.I suppose some professors could still enforce attendance. The best bet it to talk to the professor about the audit as early as you decide to change it to audit.

do you have to pay to audit a class?

yes

Unless you're retired, then you can take 'em for free. But you have to pay for the books.

Is this a standard for all universities, or are you just sure about State? Because if that's the case, I am so going to test out of some courses if I can get the books I need...

grads only get 1 free audit a semester and that is only if you are taking other courses."Graduate students: when registering and paying for other on-campus course work (Distance Education courses do not qualify for other on-campus course work), one audit course is free. When registered for more than one audit course or for an audit course only, the rates are the same as for credit. "http://www.fis.ncsu.edu/cashier/Tuition/gradtuition.asp
