recently my custom built computer has been cutting off randomly from time to time without shutting down, and then just restarts itself. Does this mean there is something wrong with my power supply? I haven't made any changes. this just started happening randomly. I built it November of 2006. i have a ULTRA connect2 550 Watt power supply.

Powersupply, overheating, or ghosts.

Ghosts sound like the most plausible explanation here.

check the screws on your mobo to make sure that none of them are grounding you out. you could also have too many periphs drawing too much power. i ran into that problem the other day. actually both problems

how would I check to see if the screws are grounding me out? should I just un-screw them and then screw them back in again? I don't think I'm drawing too much power. I can be surfin the net, with just one browser open, then... cut. restarting pc

I had a similar issue with my home-built system. It turned out that the timing on the RAM was wrong since I am running a matched pair and Tiger Direct listed the specs incorrectly. You have to check with the manufacturer for that. Also, it could be an overheating issue.

anytime i've heard of random restarts... hard drive failure coming

overheating ftw. however, most mobos, IIRC, just kill the machine when it overheats, since restarting doesn't make any sense. overheating of a component, though, can cause this. I have a video card that I think was overheating from day one, and it would often cause the machine to reboot randomly during games.check the Event Viewer if you are using WinXP. It can sometimes provide useful information. sometimes.
