looking for some free highly-customizable blogging software...as in, something that allows me to pretty much incorporate it into my site without being forced to keep to their layout/design

Wordpress

See my site (in my profile) for an example. I don't update it a lot but still you can get the idea. It's really easy to install and maintain, has tons of features and extras you can add on later. If you know HTML and CSS you can customize the crap out of it to look exactly like you want.

All of this is assuming that you have web server space somewhere that you can install it.
