Pretty boring keynote, overall. Blah, blah mostly the same stuff we heard about Leopard six months ago. However, STACKS! Finally. They've been sitting on that patent since 1988. Good to see they finally figured out how to properly implement that idea.Safari for Windows? Seriously? Who does Steve think he's trying to fool? Safari has no advantages for the Windows crowd over Firefox (and probably not IE7, either). I'd rather Apple not waste their resources on this project. The 3rd-party iPhone app development seems a little fishy to me, but I'm not a developer by any means, so maybe it does have some merit.
6/11/2007 2:43:39 PM
It's a new version of Safari (it's for Mac too, click the link), that Apple claims is the fastest browser on any platform.I'm a bit confused about that one too, but just like iTunes was, it's part of some larger strategy from Apple (i'm betting related to iPhone).
6/11/2007 2:50:02 PM
Well, Apple claimed the same thing about Safari 1.0, and I've certainly never noticed that in actual usage. It's still my preferred browser, but I'm going to have to be a little skeptical about any speed claims Apple makes about their browsers.
6/11/2007 2:59:03 PM
I'd love to use it but it doesn't have AdBlock yet.

^ is rightthey need to fix the shit that they already have for windows before they start porting other programs over

The current theory for why Safari on Windows is so that developers can test out their iPhone apps.http://www.apple.com/safari/5 (dragging the tabs around, out of/in to windows), 6, and 10 are the new features in Safari.[Edited on June 11, 2007 at 3:43 PM. Reason : ]

^^^^ I've thought the same thing, but I think there are a few distinct differences between iTunes and Safari for Windows.1 - iTunes is (was) a big step up from any other music player available for Windows (omg it uses 20 megs of memory it's a fucking resource hog omg!!). Safari really isn't all that much better than anything already available.2 - iTunes was Apple's plug to get the iPod into Windows users' hands. Without porting iTunes to Windows, Apple would have been forfeiting 90% of its iPod sales. There's no hardware tied in to Safari to boost Apple revenue.3 - iTunes has its own source of revenue built in -- the iTunes Music Store. Without porting iTunes to Windows, Apple would have been forfeiting 90% of its music sales. There's nothing to sell from within Safari (and Safari alone) to make any money for Apple. But Apple does have some solid long term plans for its products, so maybe this Safari thing will actually have some hidden secret that will blow us all away at some point in the future. (^'s suggestion about the developers for the iPhone is the only thing I can come up with, though.)Or maybe they're just really pushing the software side of the halo effect.[Edited on June 11, 2007 at 3:47 PM. Apple has proven that they get the consumer AND they have a clear strategy and approach that consumers can accept. It may not appeal to you uber geek MS and Linux fanboys, but baby boomers and Gen Y's are the groups that will pay for the simplicity, for different reasons. The baby boomers like the intuitive interface and lack of need to have to know more about their machine than what they want to do with it, as well as the ability to just take it to the mall when something goes awry. The Gen Y folks grew up with computers and see it as just another means to a given end (school, productivity, entertainment) and don't have the patience to deal with any excess baggage. Apple may not be the be all end all for everyone, but for your average non-geek who doesn't care about how many FPS you can get with [insert your favorite graphic intensive game here] your $300 overclocked video card, it fits the bill. Like it or not, Apple is slowly chipping away at marketshare from the Wintel vendors.
6/11/2007 4:03:46 PM
^ Apple has a growing user base in nix geeks though, due to OS X being very nix-y.

6/11/2007 4:28:48 PM
^^ agreed, which is what appeals to me, but I consider that/us to be more of a niche market... in other words, there are many more non-technical or average-joe consumers than techies, which is what will truly drive sales and revenue.
6/11/2007 4:35:18 PM
^ true. You were making it seem like OS X has no redeeming technical qualities, I was just making sure...
6/11/2007 4:39:58 PM
6/11/2007 4:51:31 PM
^^ yeah, i was a little unclear on that, but it's definitely viable for the technically savvy (hell, Quicksilver alone would be enough to keep me as an apple customer)^ because he's a microsoft fanboy
6/11/2007 5:00:44 PM
no. because its a slow piece of shit. The interface is garbage. It adds a ton of crap to your system for ipod support that I wont ever use. Windows media player is a better media player. So is winamp. There are no positives to outweigh the negitives.
6/11/2007 6:07:20 PM
6/11/2007 6:08:55 PM
If anyone thinks that iTunes for windows isn't a pile of crap, then you're an idiot.
6/11/2007 6:58:35 PM
leave itunes open for awhile then try to use your computer and tell me it isnt slower
6/11/2007 7:03:09 PM
Guess I'm an idiot then. I've never had a problem with it.I'm not sure your arguments of "iTunes installs a lot of ipod crap that I never use" are entirely logical. That's installed on both Windows and Mac systems, whether you need it or not. It isn't a big deal--there's much more crap on your computer that you never use (and probably don't know about) that's slowing it down more than iTunes.
6/11/2007 7:56:36 PM
I'm using the new version of Safari right now... seems about the same as Firefox to me.Does seem to load very snappy...
6/11/2007 9:12:29 PM
iTunes isn't the worse of the player/media managers. Considering the features it has it's not bad, but it's certainly not anyone's choice for a light and quick media player. That being said, it doesn't crash as much as windows media player (not MS's fault, but bad codecs.)^^ Although those 2.3 MB of RAM aren't that important on their own, it's annoying when everything seems to install a little 2.3 MB background process whether you want it to or not. It adds up on older machines really fast.Played around with safari and it is pretty speedy. It also seemed to have some trouble with videos and flash when I first loaded it, but since then it's fine. I don't imagine I'll be using it though since it's probably the least compatible browser out there (ie, NCSU authentication re-direct issues.) For some reason I seem to have better luck with opera being compatible than I do with safari.[Edited on June 11, 2007 at 9:22 PM. Reason : ]

The keynote is up now: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/keynote/Something I didn't mention...EA is going to try and do simultaneous releases and increase their Mac development now too.
6/11/2007 11:20:16 PM
Safari on Windows seems like a fairly trivial port for Apple, since I'd assume the hardest part would be the WebCore rendering engine -- and that's already built-in to iTunes for the iTunes Music Store.I also wouldn't be surprised to eventually see Safari/Windows bundled with the iTunes downloads, similar to the bundling going on w/ iTunes and QuickTime. If that's the case, Safari's market share will probably spike a bit w/o much effort. As for the browser itself, I've never been particularly fond of Safari on the Mac though... Firefox has always seemed faster, less crash-prone, and of course more extensible.
6/12/2007 6:48:12 PM
^ on a MBpro, Safari is by far faster in nearly all cases, rarely crashes, and i only need one or two extensions.Firefox is a great browser and I swore by it while I was still stuck in XP, but the speed is noticeably better in my case.FWIW, I do a lot of web design... and FF is still on my comp... only to check browser differences... and I've seen several instances where particular elements even look better in safari[Edited on June 12, 2007 at 7:34 PM. now that they've finally got moveable tabs built-in I might move back with Safari 3. I don't really *need* my extensions, I just like having them although I'd like to see NoScript ported to Safari at some point...
6/12/2007 9:12:19 PM
just wait until the full release TGD... the beta is pretty weak
6/12/2007 9:31:07 PM
You know what would be great? If Ctrl + Enter worked. Or anything that had become the Windows standard in web browsers over the past god knows how many years.Oh yeah, and if you could turn off their Font Smoothing crap, that'd be peachy as well.
6/12/2007 10:13:05 PM
What does Ctrl + Enter do? The last time I used Internet Exploder was... well I can't remember the last time I used it, if that's an indication. [edit: disregard -- Google is my friend ]The interesting thing about the Safari on Windows release will be seeing what apps get developed for the iPhone -- the legions upon legions of substandard Wintel developers who produce substandard code with minimal use now have access to the iPhone's browser for making their web-based apps in time for the launch... joy...
