I have a 97 Corolla. Whenever I start the car up I can hear a belt in the engine compartment making some noise. -The noise seems to change whenever I turn OR accelerate.-I have found that I can accelerate quickly and the noise will get increasingly loud then at about 15mph the noise stops.-Sometimes if I make a sharp turn, the noise starts back for a few secondsI lifted the hood and tried to listen to see where the belt sound was coming from. It was too loud to detect.I suspect it's the power steering belt because I had that replaced a few monthes ago. Is it too loose? Too tight? Bad belt?Whenever there is high humidity, it seems to not make the noise at all. What should I do?

way to bring up a 3 month old thread for no reason.

hmmm...lets see here...

cut the belt, it won't make noise after that.

I thought the 1ZZ didn't start until 98

yeah, 3 month old thread. surprisingly I haven't fixed the problem yet though.I bought some "belt conditioner" from advance auto parts. I sprayed it on, that helped some but not much.I think my next try will be power steering fluid. if that doesn't work ill try the tensioner thing.

it's definitely has nothing to do with the power steering fluid. the belt is either not tight enough, or it's old/worn out.[Edited on August 23, 2007 at 6:00 PM. Reason : .]
8/23/2007 5:59:13 PM
OK, that makes sense. ill see if I can adjust it without taking a tire off
8/23/2007 6:04:23 PM
you could pour brake fluid on it though, enough of that will swell the rubber belt... or maybe spray it with VHT

after you put a belt on it stretches and you should retension it after a few weeks.
