That a large segment of the Mexican population believes that the southwest US is rightfully theirs and therefore that they are entitled to it. I heard this is true, and if you look at the protests last year where half of them were flying the Mexican flag, id say it is true. Also, it is a common known fact that La Raza holds this belief.Discuss

Haha.Who cares?
6/2/2007 2:40:39 AM
Polls have shown this to be the case, but I don't think the mexicans seriously believe it. I would think it's kind of like the native americans who probably think the same way, but it's not like they would or could do anything about it.America is probably the largest country on the planet though that has a predominantly non-aborginal population.
6/2/2007 2:52:34 AM
yes, but you get enough of them in the population and boom, a separatist movement begins
6/2/2007 2:53:19 AM
What would this movement fight for? The main difference between mexicans and americans is language, culturally and religiously, we're pretty similar. It's like Quebec. There's people who want to separate, but there's no good reason to, and they don't really gain any traction.
6/2/2007 3:09:02 AM
The existence of a so-called "separatist movement," in and of itself, is unimportant. Hell, the Scots have something along those lines to this day, but even the ringleaders of that movement have been known to say that they never actually want to acheive real independence.Bitching about it brings them unity, and brings us very little negative impact. I say, let them have it.If nothing else, this whole "Mexican flag" nonsense is irrelevant; it is a banner under which many of them can claim a heritage, nothing more. Rednecks waving Confederate flags (of whatever type) are not actually, seriously requesting the re-establishment of the Confederate States. They merely want recognition for a common heritage. The same goes for Hispanics -- they just want to be one cohesive unity, for a number of reasons.Besides, all else aside, you can't reasonably expect that a transfer of formerly Mexican states to Mexico will ever occur in the next millennia. Believe it or not, Hispanics know this as well.
6/2/2007 4:13:55 AM
^^I think we're culturally and religiously quite different.

Mexican Military v. US Military. We'll be in the mood for en ego boost after Iraq.

Mexicans and Irish are pretty much the same people.
6/2/2007 10:13:22 AM
mexicans and italians are arguably quite similar, but i do believe germany has the most people here from that nifty chart someone had. mexic-anz and germans might not mesh to neatly.[Edited on June 2, 2007 at 10:22 AM. Reason : though italians get pissed when you say so.]
6/2/2007 10:22:17 AM
well, how do you define ownership of a country? Technically, they DO own it, since their ancestors were here first. We colonized it.
6/2/2007 10:36:20 AM
guess who wins that round DG

The statute of limitations has expired in relation to the South West.

Here's one difference between Mexico and the US...Mexico is culturally a lot more homogeneous than the US is.

They will do to us what Albanians did to Serbia with Kosovo.

How come no one is talking about the Hawaiians trying to regain sovernty. Oh yeah, because, like this, it's never actually going to happen. Like Grumpy said, it just gives them a cause to congregate to.
6/2/2007 10:03:38 PM
^The Hawaiians actually have a better case than the Mexicans. But I doubt we'll give it back. We already have the design ready for the Hawaii State Quarter.

i have a large italian flag hangin in my apartment and an american flag uniform patch in my wallet. just because they fly the flag of their homeland doesn't mean they underappreciate america. they are staying mindful of their roots. for fucks sake the mere fact that they come here the way they do PROVES how much they love this country.
6/3/2007 8:55:15 PM

and if they were REQUIRED by law to vote then you could say "at least they vote"
6/5/2007 10:00:08 PM
They should be required to vote; and yes, I would say that. I must be too thick to see your point. We aren't talking about the people in this country (legal citizens) who are lazy sacks of pooh who don't do anything. The issue we are discussing is illegal immigration and the illegal invasion of another country into our own.
6/5/2007 10:21:19 PM
but then who is going to work at all the chinese resturants?
6/5/2007 11:29:34 PM
I really do love this argument people have that boils down to, "It's wrong because it's illegal."Sixty years ago you people would have been saying, "We're not talking about people who are just lazy, the issue we're discussing is illegal bathroom using and the illegal invasion of another race into bathrooms of our own."And taxes? Please. THEY WOULD PAY TAXES IF WE LET THEM. An illegal worker can't pay income taxes without risking almost certain deportation. The xenophobic policy we currently follow punishes illegal immigrants FOR paying taxes and punishes the legal population for NOT paying taxes.
6/5/2007 11:48:39 PM
6/5/2007 11:59:53 PM
Well immigration is one of my pet issues and this is the first I've ever heard of it, so I should think awareness is a problem. Besides, there's a difference between having the option to pay taxes and being punished for not doing so.

I only read the initial post in this thread, so forgive me if this has been said:Ok, let's say they were entitled to it and we just decided to give the southwest back to Mexico. How long would it take before all the Mexican flag waving protesters started moving north? My guess is that they would be moved and settled before the bill that would make it official even got to the House.

Gadsden Purchase

Incidentally, while there is an "organization" that is separatist, it is not the National Council of La Raza, whose goals include such horrendous crimes against the state as lobbying for better healthcare and education for the poor. The people Republican was too stupid to be able to differentiate from the NCLR is the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, which consists of some students who have all of the political influence and relevance as you would expect a bunch of students to have.

they're basically and outdoor centralized hispanic version of tww
6/7/2007 4:05:34 PM
^^^ That was only south NM and AZ.We got the rest of the southwest after picking a fight with Mexico, then "buying" it after we creamed them.
