"Fayetteville — Fayetteville is putting the brakes on its red-light camera program.

According to published reports, the contract was dropped because of a legal dispute over the collected fines with the camera operator.

Nine red-light cameras at six intersections will be taken down when the contract ends July 31. Fayetteville put up its first red-light cameras in 1997."

Wonder if that was the only reason.

one way to find out is when they re-open this program. If the camera's have been 'redesigned' then we know the real reason behind the 'halt'

Fayetteville Calls It Quits on Red-Light Cameras

Posted: Today at 6:13 p.m.

Fayetteville — Red-light cameras to catch traffic violators are on their way out in Fayetteville, victims of an unresolvable dispute over splitting the income from fines.

Fines from violators caught by cameras are supposed to go to the local school system. A court ruled in a case involving High Point that the municipality operating the cameras could keep 10 percent to cover costs. An appeal is pending with the state Supreme Court.

City Councilman Curtis Worthy said the schools wants 100 percent of the fines, and the city wants to keep enough to cover its expenses.

Fayetteville and the Cumberland County school system have been trying to agree on fee-splitting but haven't, and the city says that the system, which uses 35mm film that has to be developed is not financially feasible otherwise.

The city's contract for the camera system runs out July 31, and that will be the end.

The city said it might consider bringing back digital cameras if the funding distribution can be resolved.

The city has nine cameras. a 10th came down in a fatal accident car accident this month."

the school system wants 100% of zero

instead of 100% of the net.

Someone should teach them which is more.

Not only that but the cameras help keep people safe.

all i've seen in fayetteville is people screeching to a halt and others rear-ending them. It doesn't seem to work out as in theory

^^ or people rushing to make the light and not get caught and almost/hitting the car ahead of them - in general, not necessarily in Fayetteville

fuck a redlight camera, anyway. horrible, stupid, ridiculous, borderline (at best) unethical/illegal idea.

It depends. Some red light cameras are not even on, they're just there for deterrence purposes. Others start taking pictures as soon as the light is red. I got a ticket for one once because my front tires were over the white line.

Do some research, then come back to the topic informed.

i'm not sure you do. 'redesigned' meaning a hint of sarcasim or minor changes that they claim have nothing to do with safety issues and 'halt' because i'm quoting the text. seriously. do we have to spell out everything for you?

I wonder if someone ran a red light to cause that accident.

Generating revenue for schools shouldn't be the motivating factor behind putting up red light cameras.

Even though it is.

I don't mind them, except if they become so widely used that they're at every street corner and are on 24hrs a day. If they can afford that, then all the lights should be motion triggered, otherwise I'll be getting alot of tickets for running rural lights at 1am
