I would say its something Nintendo did and its going to be hard for you to get around it. Mario Strikers hasn't be released in an NTSC version yet, only PAL, so it prolly triggered some fuck up in your system when the console updated. Nintendo and Microsoft have both been seriously cracking down on modded systems recently.

it' s not a huge deal to not be able to change my settings, back ups sitll wrok fine,. i'm just afraid of playing paper mario again since its supposed to really brick european wiis which may be the firware i have now.

strikers was a PAL source patched to NTSC. You had to have v2.2u of your console before you updated using strikers.

This is why I only wait for the NTSC versions.

it bricked b/c you installed the european firmware update that came w/the game. This is why you just wait for the NTSC release. It seems Nintendo has started using a new revision of the Wii mobo (Japan only for now), this one has the pins on the Panasonic chip physically removed to prevent the installation of these chips.[Edited on May 29, 2007 at 9:27 AM.
