they just called and said i should change the water pumpi think these people are just trying to add money on to the bill[Edited on May 25, 2007 at 9:00 AM. Reason : 130 bucks for it]
5/25/2007 9:00:29 AM
no, they're looking out for you and themselves. it is highly recommended to change the water pump at the same time as the timing belt since it is basically the same job to do either. the price is about right ($480) for a timing belt and water pump change.the price for brakes is a little high if all they're doing is pad-slapping it. if they are replacing rotors as well as pads then the price is fine. oil change price is fine.i'd find out about the tires though. that is where you can take a serious ass fucking. don't know how much you're looking to spend but it seems as if you care for your car. i'd go ahead and get a set of michelins for it. they're pricey but by far the best tire you can buy.go ahead and let them do the work since it's there. just like you said in your first post, your car won't need anything for a while. might as well go ahead and be done with it.where is your car at?[Edited on May 25, 2007 at 9:12 AM. I just got my timing belt and water pump done for $330 w/ labor @ Campus Auto.
5/25/2007 9:19:58 AM
^^champion auto and tire in alamance county...their inspections are only like 18 bucks...told me they take the 12 dollar hit(its normally 30) cause they want the business...mostly use them for how close they are to my parents place(less than 5 minutes)my stepdad told them to do the water pump thing cause he said the same thing you said....he was like if the water pump fucks up then they have to do more labor againi specifically remember the guy yesterday when i asked about the brakes and was like "do you want rotors" or something to that effect and i was like "idk, the last time i came they told me they were at 15 percent" and he quoted 150 to 155as for the tires my parents usually get the cheap brand kind....idk we shall see how it goes...they are gonna be able to do all this in one day apparently]
5/25/2007 9:26:12 AM
wouldn't hurt to change the oil pump also, it's in there too with the t-belt/water pump.
5/25/2007 9:38:48 AM
man i cant possibly add another thing to this...i feel bad enough that my parents are paying for it anyway...i feel like once i graduate i owe my parents so much
5/25/2007 11:15:24 AM
don't worry, they're just paying their debt to society for bringing you into this world.[Edited on May 25, 2007 at 12:33 PM. Reason : b]

5/25/2007 12:37:05 PM
ok the final total was 678about 630 of it was timing belt, water pump, and brakes...the rest was a tire rotation and oil changei thought she said new tires but it was actually a tire rotation
5/25/2007 4:01:27 PM
you cant charge for a rotation when you have all the wheels off to do brakes anyhow...
5/25/2007 4:11:34 PM
hahaha. good point.

think of it this way: the shit is done and your car hopefully won't need anything for a while and you didn't even have to pay for it.
5/25/2007 7:35:01 PM
ok i understand that...but lets pretend i were to have gotten a wolfwebber to do it(to just like satisfy my curiosity)...how much less would it have cost roughly?(pretty much my last question cause i already got it done anyways)and a final thing about the place i went to...at the end of the bill it said "get a transmission flush when possible"- i took it to leith honda and got a honda transmission service on it in january...that kinda makes me think the place is full of slimy douchebags]
5/25/2007 7:41:42 PM
the only people on here you would actually want to work on your car wouldn't have charged much less since they are the ones who know what they are doing and know how much to actually charge.
5/25/2007 9:28:19 PM
and it is a major bitch to change timing belt/water pump etc on Hondas, I think they designed their cars with job security in mind...

^^thanks^bummer the oxygen sensor is easy as shit to fix

At Merchant's we throw around free rotations like nobody's business. Why? Because it only takes like 3 seconds. If that's ALL you want done it will be 9 bucks.. otherwise free. Anybody who charges you for a rotation with anything else sucks.
5/27/2007 3:47:17 AM
so my check engine light is on now...totally gay...i bet they caused it
5/28/2007 5:32:20 PM
go to the parts store and get it checked. you might have caused it

some "below threshold" thinghe said its an oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter...told him i got a new oxygen sensor about 20k miles ago(baonest <3) and hes like it couldnt be that...he said to go to where i got it worked at and tell them to look over it and make sure they hooked everything up rightso its either catalytic converter or they didnt hook it up right...either way it makes me that i figured my car was good for a while but its messed up again
5/28/2007 6:11:06 PM
ok so since i got a new oxygen sensor 20k miles ago its probably the catalytic converter right?http://autozone.com/addVehicleId,2405001/initialAction,partTypeResultSet/initialN,16000071/shopping/vehicleSelected.htmthe direct fit one is like 161 and the universal fit is like 66- man this is gay how it could be 2 possible things...i dont wanna pay for one and have it be the other one...
5/30/2007 10:28:38 AM
^same thing happened to me...ended up spending around $400 to find the problem (4-5 different garages, most claimed it was one of the O2 sensors, even had one changed) finally found out it was just a hole in the pcv valve hose.
5/30/2007 10:31:44 AM
^hmmmmm....interestingi've noticed my fuel consumption already dropping(dont think its just cause i've used the a/c in the past few days)i had a full tank as of sunday at about 3am and now i'm almost at half a tanksaw a website- http://www.autohausaz.com/html/emissions-oxygen_sensors.html

5/30/2007 10:57:19 AM
i just called the place...i told him that it showed a code and hes like well you cant really listen to those guys, they dont know what they are talking about...then hes like i could tell you the code, its probably a 178 or 177(numbers around there...said like 3 of them) and i'm like nah its a 0420 and hes like oh...he said he doubted it was the oxygen sensor and that it could be a crack in a tube or just a tube not connected and that he would look at it for free cause he guaranteed the work...the guy on the accord forum said catalytic converters should last way more than 106 miles so he doesnt think its that, but i mean an oxygen sensor going out after 21k miles is pretty unheard of imo...[Edited on May 30, 2007 at 1:03 PM. 5/30/2007 1:02:31 PM
shot in the dark:i highly doubt it's your converter.accords of that year had problems with alternators, vehicle speed sensors, oxygen sensors and the egr systems clogging up (i believe it was only with the v6 though).i'd check to see if there is a secret warranty/recall on your car by calling the dealership and having them run your vin number.i've gotten a lot of stuff free this way.that idling problem you have is most likely b/c you need to clean out the idle control valve or leaking vacuum lines. if it's the idle valve, it's pretty easy, but it's located in a shitty place.or you could just replace it, but's it's a $200+ part.[Edited on June 1, 2007 at 9:58 AM. 6/1/2007 9:57:09 AM
i took it to the place i got the work done yesterday...the guy looked at it and came back and said it was probably a "bad cat"he told me i could wait til the next inspection as it wouldnt affect my driving at all...i tell him the guy at autozone said it would take a few miles off my miles per gallon mileage, and he pretty much shrugged it off by saying "if anything, you will have increased power"...hes like i cleared the code...call me when it comes back on and we can go from there(didnt have catalytic converter prices in his computer for my car)i looked at autozone...66 for a one size fits all, 162 for a direct fit...call burlington honda and the motherfucker says it costs 555 dollars to get a new catalytic converter...my mom told me i should have told them to fuck off(i just said thanks, bye)it hasnt came back on yet after about 60 miles of driving...i made sure i put the gas cap on good and i put 10 bucks of premium in it before driving those 60 miles...dont know if that affected anything
6/1/2007 1:50:05 PM
stop wasting your money putting premium on your accord.
6/1/2007 1:55:17 PM
i almost bought a bottle of fuel injection cleaner but i didnt think it'd help with this problem anydoes running on e a lot(or close to e a lot) affect this problem any?for the past month i had been on e a lot...cant even recall how many times my low gas tank light came on in the past month, i'd say at least 10]
6/1/2007 1:58:07 PM
4-cyl or v6?you looking for a bosch or denso?[Edited on June 1, 2007 at 2:37 PM. Reason : o2 sensor, that is]it would be the "after cat" sensor if its throwing a 0420 code... or the cat itself. it does not affect performance (unless the cat is clogged), strictly for emissions.if it were the 1st (pre-cat) o2 sensor, it would have been a fuel trim or oxygen sensor code and that would definitely affect performance.[Edited on June 1, 2007 at 2:39 PM. Reason : more info]
6/1/2007 2:37:30 PM
4 cylinderi'm pretty sure(like 95 percent sure) i got the 0420 code last time when baonest put in my new oxygen sensor(i'm sure cause he said the "below threshold thing)...i dont know how far behind the cat the oxygen sensor is, but the one baonest put in(that kept my check engine light off until now) was in the front 3rd of the car(probably at about where the middle of the front door(its a sedan))...i'm going to ask him if he thought it was in front of or behind the catboth the guy at autozone and the mechanic said it was behind the cat(down stream? is that what downstream is?)- i just figured the one baonest put in was in front of the cat cause it was in the front part of the car- when i bought the oxygen sensor they asked me if it was the manifold oxygen sensor or the emissions oxygen sensor and i told them emissions(just assumed since it was causing my emissions to not pass)so to summarize- 4 cylinder, first oxygen sensor i got put in was like the "emissions sensor"(bought from honda dealership), it was in the front 3rd of the car(underneath), got it changed august 05- the mechanic now said it was behind the cat(downstream?), and it wouldnt affect performance, but that he thought it was probably a "bad cat"i just wish i could like clean the grime off these things with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol...i bet that would helpok gonna pm baonest now...i'll bump this thread with his info later[Edited on June 1, 2007 at 3:05 PM. Reason : i'm gonna look up pictures online and see if i can find a pic of where the oxy sensors are]
6/1/2007 2:59:51 PM
first (upstream) sensor is usually on the manifold right near the engine, or at least close to the engine. sounds like you're describing the later one.could be the cat.. could be the sensor.. hard to diagnose which over the internet
6/1/2007 3:07:56 PM
oh ok...well on the net(been researching) they say its almost unheard of that it could go bad after 20k miles(they say they are good for 100k miles)...so it almost sounds like it HAS to be the cateither its the cat or some kinda malfunction(i heard on the internet if the oxygen sensor is lose(there are like 4 things that plug in) it may give you that)...also heard that if a tube is cracked or not put on correctly it may give that codehow much would you charge(you seem to be pretty knowledgable on these things) to look at a car and make sure everything is plugged up right? also, how hard is it to take off a catalytic converter(just wondering if its possible to take off the thing and clean it)[Edited on June 1, 2007 at 3:20 PM. Reason : dont really know what "tubes" they could be referencing...just that an unconnected tube might be it]
6/1/2007 3:19:11 PM
Has anybody checked the valve cover to see if it's leaking? That's what happened to my car when it idled rough. The code came up O2 sensor also, but that it turns out to be the valve cover leaking oil into the spark plugs.
6/1/2007 3:24:53 PM
i'm guessing they might have checked it yesterday(they told me they would check their work since they guarenteed their work), but he told me everything looked fine which led him to the "probably a bad cat" commenti kinda want to hit up maximadrvr, dont know how much he would charge just to look at it and make sure its actually a cat
6/1/2007 3:28:24 PM
They didn't work on the spark plugs so I doubt they checked the valve cover.
6/1/2007 3:29:37 PM
i see your point...i'll google that and see if its something i can do myself
