I was wondering if anyone knows of any walking/running loops around durham/chapel hill. I know RTP has alot of trails, but I dont know where the shady ones are, and I've heard about the Tobacco trail, but, again, same thing. Also, where do you park?

in Chapel Hill, off of 15-501, almost directly across the street from Manning Drive (The road that the hospital is off of) is a great park that is full shaded and perfect for hiking/walking. It's the UNC Botanical Gardens. The gardens are separate from the trails.

Nice! I work on Manning.... I just have to figure out how to get there since I either take the TTA or do the park and ride...

here's an idea, don't be an ass.its 1 mile from my building to the end of manning dr. Just walking there and back would be as long as the the trails in the park. Also, manning drive is not shaded, and its not in a park, its by a busy rd. thnx.

why does it have to be in the shadethe purpose of getting exercise is to sweat
5/23/2007 2:33:04 PM
the purpose of exercise is to work your muscles and cardiovascular systemsweat just keeps you cool so you dont overheatshade does the same thing

Not necessarily, you don't have to sweat to get a good workout (think swimming, skiing, etc.)The purpose of exercise is to benefit your health.

I've seen most of those maps, but I dont have any first-hand experience on how near roads they are and how sunny they are.I'm wanting shade because 1) its cooler, and 2) I'm using acne medication so the less sun the betteralso, the cooler you are, the more you can work out before your muscles become fatigued. 1-find trails on the maps Lius just posted2-look at them on google maps in satellite mode3-try the one that is the shadiestIf you really want shade, go trail running in a freaking park (something like Umstead or Lake Johnson).

^^^You still sweat when you swim, you just don't see it since it washes right off.

Don't worry, most of Durham is shady.
