how the fuck am I a racist? I can deal with idiot and troll because I've no doubt you actually believe such things...but I am not a racist. There was an entire 20/20 devoted to this issue. I'm just infuriated that people get away with saying some of the things they do. I don't believe the n-word should ever be used, by anybody.... Double standards for language exist in lots of places.

Some gay people call each other fairies, fags, queens, etc...

And women call themselves whores, bitches, sluts, etc... I hate this, by the way. I can't stand calling a friend and having her answer, "What's up, bitch?"

And that's on a larger level. Take it to the interpersonal or small group level, and you'll see more and more different sets of rules for the way we talk to one another.

Look at family, for example. I can bitch about my mother all damn day, but my friend better not say a fucking word about my mother cause that's my mother, my family.

Everyone understands why it exists. I think that a lot of people dont like double standards though. Something about everyone being treated equally.

Allowing only one race to say a word and preventing other races from it is discrimination based on race, which is by definition, racism. Slightly ironic?

It's possible that Boone meant it's absolutely wrong for whites to say nigger, in any context, then both you and Boone would be wrong, because it's not absolutely wrong in any context, either way.

But, from the context of Boone's post, I think he meant that white people can't casually use the word nigger, because blacks who don't know them might get the wrong idea. If this is wrong, then it's up to Boone to correct me.

Yes, it is a double standard based on race. So?

Groups who frequently face oppression use the vocabulary of their oppressors as a symbol of solidarity and empowerment-- if you're a member of the oppressing group, then it's often offensive when you use the wrong vocabulary.


I guess what I'm failing to understand is, why does this double standard bother you?

If you have any sort of tact at all it's extremely simply to avoid using words in incorrect context when discussing minorities.

You are free to say "nigger" all you want. So let's not go comparing this to being forced to the back of the bus, denied bank loans, denied a simple seat at a restaurant, prohibited from buying the home you want, denied jobs/promotions/college admissions, etc...based on the color of your skin.

Furthermore, there's a difference between being discriminated against because of your skin color + a word you choose to use and discriminated against solely because of your skin color.

NIGGER, NIGGER, NIGGER...say it all you want. Call black people NIGGERS! to their faces if you want. I'd like to know why you would want to use a word that you know is offensive coming from you. And why you expect black folks to all of the sudden accept it coming from you when almost every other time it's been used towards them by a white person, the intent has been derogatory.

Forget the 'n-word'....how about 'articulate' or 'bright'? Apparently as a white person, I can speak about another white person and use those words, but I may not speak about a black person and use those words...however, a black person may use those words when speaking about another black or white person.
