Try http://www.freenas.org/ since you are currently running your own box, then spend the $500 on more disks and a GbE card. I've heard mixed reviews on a lot of these plug-and-play NAS boxes. If you build it yourself you can definitely get more MB/$ and you can ensure that all of the components are of the quality you want.

Unless you need high performance, I recommend an embedded NAS system. Using an old PC will get you all the same features and more times more, but the embedded systems will do a good job for about a 10th of the power usage. Investing a little bit more money will pay for itself by keeping your power bills lower. Also, they put off less heat so your cooling bill will be a little lower as well (admittedly, probably not enough to decern above the normal varience in power bills). I second the nominations of buffalotech and lacie.

Had a bad experience with BuffaloTech so I'd 2nd the LaCie vote, but I'd also recommend going with your own box -- if nothing else, provides room for expansion as your needs grow and technology advances
