now that the macbook pros are using santa rosa, they'll almost certainly do the next hardware refresh on the macbooks when Leopard comes out in october. besides santa rosa, what else do you think they'll change? i'll probably get one once Leopard comes out. I wonder how apple is going to handle back-to-school promotions?

how significant is the difference between the intel gma 950 and GeForce 8600M GT. i have the intel on my dell d620 and it seems sufficient. would i be missing out if apple kept the intel on the next macbook revision?

^^^ i'm hoping that the upgrade the iMacs in the same way that they did the Macbook Pros, if so then it could become a worthwhile future purchase (i'd like a new desktop, looks are important, i don't mind using mac os as much as i used to, and imac's honestly aren't as bad as they used to be, it's just lame that they still aren't easily upgradeable)

^^heh. nah. i've been eyeing the macbook pros for over a year. just never wanted to drop 2k+ on one. now i've decided i'd be happy with just a macbook, so i just gotta wait for leopard to come out

[Edited on July 18, 2007 at 10:48 AM. Reason : though i wouldn't mind an iphone in a year or so - my ipod is over 2 years old]

^ that's a shame too, because now is pretty much the only time i've seen the 2000 dollar macbook pro be anywhere close to price competitive with similarly equipped laptops...

but hey, i can understand not wanting to spend 2000 on a laptop... i hate thinking about how much i spent on mine, and it was outdated within 3 months (when santa rosa came out)

new ipods next week?

so now what should i do? buy a macbook next week and get a free (possibly upgraded) ipod, or wait till october and get a macbook (possibly upgraded - has anybody heard anything about hardware refresh on the macbook) with Leopard. get macbook+freeipod now and upgrade to leopard later, or start w/ leopard on a maybe upgraded macbook with no free ipod

at this point, i would wait to buy anything Apple.
Wait until at least next week for iPods, and until end of October for Macs

^^ The iMacs were just bumped, so it's pretty safe to buy them.

The iPods are definitely due for a refresh though.

^^^ I'm not sure about the "wait to buy anything Apple."

But I'm guessing when you say wait till the end of October for Macs, you're referring to waiting on Leopard to be included. In that case, I have to agree.

yeah, no reason to buy an iMac now then pay another $130 to upgrade the OS in 2 months.

You get free upgrades for the first 30 days.

So, if you're waiting for new hardware, rest assured that it will be upgraded for free.

As for Macbooks, there's not going to be a hardware refresh anytime next month...probably around holiday season or later.

hopefully new macbooks are on the way. i've been waiting 18 months to get one, finally will when this refresh happens. though i'd be a little surprised that they didn't just announce it on friday since there was hype with Leopard anyways. I'd be pissed if I bought a new macbook on friday just to have new ones come out a week later

a better analogy is hey lets put in a big turbo and give you 400hp but limit your top end to 55mph. Or limit your torque to 50. aka honda

You should swap that turbo out for a jet engine.

For a laptop, I'd say definitely. If you actually plan to use a laptop for more than a year you should have it warrantied for more than a year. Even if you're careful with a laptop, they are still much more likely to experience failure due to normal wear than a desktop is. Last consumer reports article I saw on the subject had the warranty repair rate for laptops within 3 years at about 12-23% depending on manufacturer. The most common parts to be replaced, in order of likelyhood were:

1.) HDD
2.) Keyboard
3.) LCD Backlight

Either of the first 2 will cost you close to the warranty cost if you used original apple parts. With that in mind, and the fact that you get really good customer service for the duration of the extended warranty... I'd say go for it.

Maybe not worth it on a low end macbook though, since the portion of the cost of the machine is so high. If it's your primary computer I'd still tend to suggest the warranty upgrade.

Here's an image cropped from a consumer reports laptop reliability survey. Almost a 1 in 5 chance of needing warranty repair services in 3 years:

I second the APP for laptops. the one i got for my wife's macbook has paid for itself a couple times over. If you want, you can wait until the end of your first year, when the normal 1-year warranty runs out, to by the AppleCare plan. but just be sure to buy it before 1 year is up.

the APP is just an extended manufacturer warranty and support plan, right? it doesn't cover accidental damages?

^^wait what??? I've asked this 100 times at the apple store and they always tell me that is incorrect and I have to buy it within the first 14 days. (although I didn't buy APP because I have found the one year to be awesome already) but since my machines are still within warranty I might have to pick that up.

yep, it's any time within the 1-year limited warranty period. That's the route I'm taking with my MBP b/c I don't have the $texas yet...

well what sucks is my MBP's 1 year expired in June after using it several times (the warranty) and when i asked about purchasing APP they said no... so i won't make this mistake with my iMac.
