Google maps tells me I should take US-74 Westbound back toward Charlotte, then get onto I-485 to go to I-85. A more direct route that doesn't take me back west seems to be US-601 North, bypassing Concord, then US-29 North to I-85. Any suggestions on which might be better? I'll be driving in the daylight (leaving Monroe around 3PM).

601 is a breeze from Monroe up into Concord.

Take 601 up to Concord just north of the Hwy 49 intersection. Veer right on Union St. Go through a few lights, staying straight when it turns into Branchview Rd. Eventually, after a couple lights turn Right on Copperfield Blvd in Concord. That will spit you out on I-85 at exit 60. If you're coming not during "rush hour" (this is concord, so still...rush hour is like waiting 3 minutes at a stoplight) it is really a straight shot.

I live in concord, so it makes sense to me to come up that way instead of going the wrong way to get on 85 in charlotte then back around to Exit 60 eventually - i guess it depends on how much you like the interstate.

I hate driving through Monroe - too many fucking 18 wheelers and stop lights. What a damn nightmare.

Im from that area. It really depends on time of day. Anytime around rush hour, 74 and 85 suck balls. So 601 to 85 if its around rush-hour and 74 to 485 to 85 if its not. Just my $.02
