No PWCs. This would be on Lake Norman.

that one doesn't have a step in the hull

ALWAYS LOOK FOR A STEPPED HULL IF SPEED IS YOUR MAIN CONCERN!

look @ stingray they have a sIIIIck hull
but when you throttle down be careful they don't drop in the water as fast as others.

I have a friend with a 23' thats been 74 gps with a fairly stock 330 hp 454 on smith mountain lake
its on lake norman now though.

well the fastest would be a flat bottom river boat but... you'll beat the hell out of yourself doing it.

Going fast in boat is overrated, unless you are doing some open ocean shit and hitting some serious speeds.

^^Have always heard bad things about them from Dad's customers.

^Shutup Yankee.

I was looking for something small to play with on a empty day at the lake. If I wanted a boat for open water fishing I would've said so.

Such as?

I've not heard anything bad about Stingrays...got a cousin with one, and his brother-in-law also has one. And the brother-in-law is a boat fucking freak. Used to sell 'em.

why do you need something super fast? find yourself a used cuddy cabin and cruise around with some friends and maybe camp out on the lake. Should still be fast enough to waterski with.

I've gone 78 mph in a boat before, but it cost $120k. Poor people that want to go fast should stick with PWCs.

i think your best bet is an old 70's style jet boat with a big block. tahiti, nordic, etc.

they can be had from 5-8k in good condition with rebuilt motors/pumps.

a fairly stock one should do a solid 65+, built motors will get you 80+.

the only downside is they're really hard to find on the east coast. i've been looking for a while.

I wish I could find an old enclosed cockpit tunnel hull looking boat with an outboard, but I'm sure it wouldn't be in that price range.

170mph

I wanna go fast on the lake when it's not too choppy. Don't need a big boat for taking friends cause I've got one. Don't need a fishing boat because it's the lake. Don't want a PWC b/c I've got a standup and don't want another boat that size. I just wanted to know how fast I could go for that kind of money? I don't want to have to work on it, just drop and go.

seriously....

stingray + supercharger + lower unit + prop = WOOOHAAAA and she won't kill you in chop

we actually raced a 2khp 21' custom boat running alki on smith mountain lake and he couldn't keep up cause it wasn't long enough (we were in a 23' before swim platforms were counted so the equivalent of a 24-25'now)
he ended up spinning it trying to get the power to the water on a windy choppy day which was weird... i'd never seen a boat spin before well... on accident.

and all the stingray has on it is a ported/polished aluminum intake manifold and a decent carb so maybe 350hp (330 stock)

its a pretty damned fun boat... its fuel injected now w/ a procharger... same prop though so not much faster just a lil quicker out of the dig.

the thing that sucks about the boat is the step isn't designed well for a skier the boat i doesn't plane well till a lil over 25 so 2 skis suck slalom its fine and wake boarding it pushes a TON of water.

and its a 1996 so... 11 years and the glass is fine... he's re-doing the gel coat on it this year though cause his blue is looking too teal now.

the fastest boat for freshwater lakes that money can buy is a bass boat. period.
obviously you'd have to buy a used one since the new ones range from 30K-50K.
i've been in a Champion bass boat with a 250 mercury on the back that would run over 85mph. i'm sure that's pretty close to it's limit but that is insanely fast on a lake.

i'll throw my $.02.... stingray... honestly for that price you can find a stingray that'll do 50+, hell mine does 55+ with a 4.3 carb and 23p 3 blade on an Alpha 1.

there are plenty of guys out there with the 22 or 23' that can do upwards of 65-70 with little if any work depending on the motor. they make a good quality boat for the price and can't beat the speed... the z-plane hull is amazing. their glass has gotten better over time as they've gone back to doing things a little different. went to the plant last year and they really have their act together. yeah they're no sea ray or nordic or donzi or fountain... but for affordable speed they can't be beat

why would you want such a fast boat in a small closed area? and by small...I'm comparing a lake to the ocean. I guess growing up with a boat out on the open sea has spoiled me...but I don't think I can fully appreciate boating on a lake unless its strictly tubing/skiing

^^ to me that seems like a dumb statement... sml still takes 2 hrs to go from 1 end to the other @ a 55 mph cruise that seems like more than enough room to me.

but then its fed by 2 "main channels"
