I've been going to a local spa for several years now - usually for massages, facials and occasionally nails. Don't get my nails done very often because while I like the way they look when done, I just don't like spending a ton of time on them. This spa has services that they advertise as "Just for Him Hands & Feet", which take half the time as the ones for the ladies. The spa used to let me book these services, but now they say only men can book them. I don't want nail polish, paraffin, gold dust, etc - just the basics. I've written the owner but no response.

Is this discrimination? I can't imagine they have services that are just for women or just for white people, why do they have them just for men?

It is a private business they can do what they like.

Never come across/heard of for women only gyms, spas, etc?

P.S. You can be pissed all you like. Is that something you let other people decide?

I don't let other people decide but it's sometimes nice to see whether other people think I'm being reasonable.

no, but you know what is? "ladies night" where ladies get in free or at a lower cover charge at bars/clubs.

^so, are you more likely to go to clubs where you know there will be more women because they got in for halfprice? and are you more likely to score 'cause they're drinking more?

not like [clubbing broads] and [broads in classes] are disjoint sets.

broads who attend class go clubbing as well, and vice versa.

^The funny thing is you don't even know his mother, but you will call her a whore. She might be a pretty cool gal. of course, now she is a dirty little whore. hmmmmm.

Maybe he got a hold of his dad's girly mags at a young age. What do you think drunk? Why are you disrespecting women?

^Don't know what you're getting at.

I'm making silly observations about men who are obessed with "sluts" and identifying "sluts" and making sure they never befriend or date "sluts."

On the other tip, guess what you can do...

Think there is a difference. Discrimination, with regards to civil liberties, has a purpose refusing service because of race,culture,etc...
Where this has a purpose of attracting men to a salon. They refuse the service not because you are a woman. They refuse it because women do not apply to the purpose of the sale.

seems to me they are basically trying to attract male clientele who not otherwise show up, so they offer a stripped version. it doesn't seem great if you're a woman and want the same thing, but they know that they already HAVE you. women are coming regardless, so they don't have to accomodate, but without a deal like this, men wouldn't show up.

I would ask them if they can't individually price things so you get a similar package. It does seem pretty gay... I'm almost like a guy when it comes to my nails...get it done, no frills, get me out of there, I'd take umbrage to it as well.
Is the women's package more expensive? If its not, get it and just tell them you dont want all the extras... If they wont accommodate you I'd speak to a manager or just tell them that you're not happy with that, you're going to another spa.

btw, why not just go to a nail salon? cheaper and quick...

Oh, yes, the women's package is more expensive. The funny thing is that if they accommodate my request, they will make more in the same hour than if they don't because I'll have two services instead of one. And I have over $300 in gift cards from here and would like to use them. It's just the whole principle of the thing that gets me - I don't patronize dry cleaners that charge more for women's shirts, why should I change for this spa?

But if anyone has recommendations for a clean nail salon I'd love to hear them.

jesus, just shut up and go somewhere else, or stop complaining. This shit is very common. Have you ever gone to a barber/salon? Women's haircuts are always more expensive than men's cuts. There is not discrimination, and the "principle" behind this is very simple. They're not trying to screw you, they're just making packages that are tailored towards different people most likely based on lots of data they've gathered over the years as to what services men and women generally like.

You would think they would have to admit men because VMI had to admit women.

But that would be fair and the courts can't allow that.

^umm VMI gets gummit $$$. if they'd drummed up enough alumni support to go private they could've stayed single-sex. iirc they almost did.

You guys do know that you can take courses at Meredith, Bryn Mawr, etc, right?

Not to mention that a lot of those colleges' grad schools are co ed. You, as a male, can graduate from Meredith's MBA program if you want to.

Plus, there are still some men-only schools:
1. Deep Springs College
2. Hampden-Sydney College
3. Morehouse College
4. Wabash College

yeah, but that would be worthless.

No one would hire a dude who got an MBA from a women's college.

Well if he's so pissed about not being let into a women's college, he can take it up with the court system. I don't see many men bitching that they've been getting better educations for longer than women have, so it shouldn't even be an issue.

I don't know many men who want to go to women's colleges, so I don't know why he'd care that he couldn't go to one.

Yeah, that's ridiculous to think it's discrimination when there's a TON more services that are available only to women.

plus, we get a freaking channel on tv (Lifetime). helllloooo

also, the amount of men that even walk into spas to get work done is a LOT less than women. that's why it's way cheaper.
