Im moving up to brooklyn in a few weeks and looking to buy a little moped. What should I focus on and is there a huge difference between 50cc and 150cc bikes. What brands are the best for under $800 used.

I thought the question was going to be 'Why do you endanger your lives by trying to ride those things down the highway?'

i looked at one when i went to UF cuz everyone had one and parking was terrible. many of those 50cc's are slow as crap, making them useless anywhere besides side streets and heavy traffic (which might work for you, but if you need to take it elsewhere you'd wish you had splurged a little).

it seems the 50cc ones only go around 35mph. And I wont be driving it on any busy streets or at least streets wider than 2 lanes.

with vespa you'll probably be fine, but some other brands dont even go 35.

I had a 150cc Vespa until about half a year ago, sold it, upgraded. You won't even find a decent running 50cc for $800 if you want a Vespa.

Get something with some power that can get out of its own way. Why not a motorcycle?

get one that you can have modified for more power, those things are slow by law. You need to be able to maintain 40-50mph with groceries even up a hill but even the best mopeds can't do that. With more power, one of those mopeds is all anybody needs 90% of the time. I heard some models are designed to have alot of power hidden via restricted exaust piping: maybe all you'll have to do is unblock the exaust. Also, spend some money and get a nice motorcycle suit and a real motorcycle helmet. You'll be more comfortable and safer. Actually, if you're going to be in traffic all the time maybe you don't need more power. Compared to the price of cars and car insurance, don't be cheap spending on your moped.
