I put this in the Lounge in hopes of having some serious responses.I come into contact on a day to day basis with a lot of UNC graduates and every single one of them has trouble discerning intelligence from rudeness. In other words, they seem to believe that by being rude to someone, that somehow equates to intelligence. They do it to each other and everyone around them. It's particular to UNC graduates and is displayed intensely when they feel threatened. What I want to know is if anyone on this message board has ever met someone who graduated from UNC who was not arrogant and with whom it was not difficult to have a conversation? It's like they specialize in making snide remarks that are just below the level of being so rude that you want to punch them every time they speak. Are they upset because they finally realized that UNC is mostly a school where rich people send their kids who aren't smart enough to get into Duke, Brown, etc., and need a place that will accept their idiot kids with a nice big donation?/rant[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 5:00 PM. Some people are at UNC because they couldn't get into Brown/Duke, some could have gone there but thought UNC is "just as good" but relatively cheap. I haven't attended UNC but I talk to people there. They might be bitter because UNC seems like just your average state-school hiding behind a fading reputation of prestige. A lot of them do have a "superiority complex" (a lot of intelligent people do, sadly), they think they are too smart to be treated as a "number," but that's exactly how they are treated. A lot of them go in denial though, and try to pretend that they like it. The "abercrombie douchebag" scene, for lack of a better phrase, is very prevalent there, though it certainly doesn't apply to everyone. Don't talk politics with these people, even if you are liberal and agree with what they say; they will get on your nerves. Basically, there are a lot more stuck-up opinionated douchebags at UNC than most schools, but there are cool people there too. Some even genuinely like UNC, typically those who still hang out with their boatload of friends from HS.Also, graduate school is a completely different story, grad students there do get some attention, and they are possibly too old for the "abercrombie douchebag scene."[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 5:48 PM. It's not by choice, so postulating that I hang out with assholes is irrelavent in this context.Furthermore, like I said, it appears to be endemic to UNC undergraduates. The people that I know that are in graduate school, notwithstanding Kenan Flagler, are all really cool people. It is just the people who attended undergraduate school there. Albeit some of the graduate students are former UNC undergrads, but the majority that I know are not UNC undergrads.
4/26/2007 5:56:06 PM
I know plenty of people who went to UNC and aren't rude like you describe.Maybe you need to quit hanging around assholes.

^thx I knew a lot of people like you existed, money is factor in a lot of people going to UNCI turned down a free ride to UNC because State had a better CSC undergrad program

There are a lot of people I know who changed when they went to UNC. I know. Who doesn't change in college? But even the ones who I still think are really cool people were subjected to the same pressures as any UNC student. I'd venture that UNC undergrads as compared to others are maybe more likely to be caught up in school "status". It is inconceivable to them that UNC is in any way inferior to any other state university in North Carolina. UNC's superiority is then conferred upon them solely through attendance. This is probably the root of arrogance for some. An attitude of arrogance can very easily become rudeness I would imagine, although it depends on the person and how self-confident they are. What's unfortunate is this attitude is pervaded by the administration and faculty. It is clear to any objective observer that status is very, very important to UNC. If anything, this is a detriment to the students there, instilling a sense of entitlement rather than hard work.
4/26/2007 8:31:01 PM
jcs1283, you have articulated the issue much better than I did in my orginal post. You are correct. I do think it is a sense of entitlement that is affecting their egos negatively. I cannot imagine, after being forcefully subjected to them, ever wanting to work for or hire a UNC undergraduate. Some work hard, some don't. That's not the point. The attitude of their students creates a feeling of disdain that is almost uncontrollable and that spills over into my hate for their athletic teams. Glad to know that other people have noticed this as well.
4/26/2007 9:29:48 PM
Yeah, entitlement is a good way to sum up the attitude. Just remember it's a generalization though
4/26/2007 9:42:02 PM
i really think it just depends on the sample. plus, i can't imagine only one school out of thousands in the US that has these characteristics. i went to undergrad there and don't really think i've changed personality wise. i know plenty of assholes from state, doesn't mean the whole student body is that way
4/26/2007 10:04:14 PM
I understand that I am generalizing, but I am generalizing based on everyone I have ever met that went to school there over the entire length of my life.It is so pervasive that people, for example, who attended ECU tend to love UNC and make comments about UNC's alleged academic and athletic superiority. It boggles the mind. I realize that ECU isn't great at sports, but for God's Sake that is your university. What the hell is wrong with people? In my current situtation, there are a couple of ECU undergrads who love to talk about how great Carolina is and the second they walk away all the little UNC rats make snide comments about how inferior ECU is or how "she looks like she went to ECU."I am positive they do the same thing to me behind my back. Obviously I couldn't be as smart as them because they went to UNC and I had to go to State.I didn't even apply to UNC because I had met so many terribly conceited people and was in fear of becoming one of them. It certainly must be something that happens when you attend that school as people are not naturally this way. More speculation on my part and all opinion, but when they are alone without other UNC undergrads around they are fairly decent and personable, but once you get a few of them together, they change. Herd mentality I suppose. But are they teaching arrogance as a freshman course at that school?[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 10:14 PM. Reason : deleted]

^That may be true, except for first hand experiences that would lead me to believe otherwise.I thought it would be easy to get you people on board hating on UNC.Personally I don't see the nexus between detecting arrogance and paranoia, but then I am no psychologist.[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 10:31 PM. some ncsu people are determined to hate everything UNC. what you are saying may be true, but acknowledging it makes you seem like you have an inferiority complex or something. just realize that ncsu is a great school and be content with that. fwiw, the only people who have ever talked shit to me about unc vs. ncsu are people who go to ECU. except for the assholes over at insidecarolina, all the people i encounter from unc are generally pretty nice.
4/27/2007 2:07:30 AM
I run into the same problem at Campbell. UNC kids are the worst about whining. They constantly want to compare their education or sports teams to State.

I think the problem is that people seem to forget you go to school to (drum roll please).... get an education. It doesn't matter what your school's sports teams do, how nice your campus is, etc. All that matters is hopefully you aren't as much of a dumbass when you leave as when you show up as a freshman.A dedicated person with a library card could easily end up more intelligent and well-rounded than a Harvard grad if so inclined.[Edited on April 27, 2007 at 11:42 AM. There are worthless piles of human waste that are UNC students and/or graduates, and there are some very cool people who are UNC students and/or graduates. However, whenever I first meet a tarhole, I assume the former until they prove themselves to be the latter.

are state students really any different about comparing?that's pretty much SOP for any rivalry. You think michigan and OSU don't do the same shit?
4/27/2007 12:54:03 PM
I think a big factor might be the competition of law school. You are essentially pitted against your classmates that any little advantage they think they have is constantly brought out. There are some normal UNC kids, of course, but it just seems like a group expect things to be given to them. It shoudl also be noted that the class gunner was from NCSU, but he was just a geek and not arrogant.Well, we have a lot of state students in my class as well and we whine our share. There are differences with going from a big school with direct deposit and online registration to a small school that does not have either. However, this group of UNC kids find every little detail to pick on, whether its who got put in what section or having to have make up classes. There were a couple of students that felt that they should have the job interviews or be admitted over a kid that went to ECU because UNC was harder than ECU. Just petty crap.[Edited on April 27, 2007 at 12:59 PM. Reason : k]
4/27/2007 12:54:31 PM
I would say that about 80% of our student body are UNC undergrads and maybe 4% NCSU so that may have something to do with this. However, alleging an inferiority complex is just missing the whole point. The only issue here is arrogance and sense of entitlement and an active conversation about how stupid ECU undergraduates are as well as other schools in general.
4/27/2007 1:07:17 PM
The people that I know who went to uncch are ok for the most part, they enjoy the rivalry with State and we banter back and forth. I've met some carolina douches as well, but eff 'em.It's the bandwagoners who couldn't spell carolina let alone find chapel hill on the map that are worst.
