^^^^ i definitely didnt come up with those ideas at all . Those ideas basically come from High School physics. Being a mechanical engineer stuff like sound and light speed barriers have just generally been useful or interesting to me wasnt trying to sound smart/shrug^i think i made it clear considering i actually put quotations around the information as well as said it came off of a site i had bookmarked and i obviously didnt create the pictures.im also not saying anything in there is absolute fact. just something to think about. its not any huge scientific thing just a couple grad students' responses to a question about the speed of light.[Edited on April 25, 2007 at 11:35 PM. 50 years ago, reputable scientists said it was "impossible" for humans to break the sound barrier.yes, i know there's a significant difference between the nature of light and sound.10 years ago, reputable scientists said it was "impossible" to ever break the 1GHz barrier for microprocessors...i aint sayin we're gonna see anyone approach a significant fraction of the speed of light in our lifetime. but i'm still skeptical of people who say "no way no how" with such certainty..i think i'll remain an agnostic on this issue for the time being.

4/26/2007 1:55:56 AM
^^^ i definitely understand your point. however scientists making claims that we would never break the sound barrier etc were pretty ignorant. i know hindsight is 20/20 but its the truth. light is different as so much truthful, visible physics is BASED on the speed of light thats its almost indescribable to think about even approaching the speed of light much less break it based on what we know about it whereas getting a faster microprocessor is on a much much larger scale. no huge laws of our universe are based on the speed of a microprocessor.[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 2:19 AM. 4/26/2007 1:56:19 AM
^ yeah, i agree with you exactly. the speed of sound, or even electron speeds across silicon junctions are kind of relative compared to the speed of light which is so fundamental to the structure of the universe ...... at least as we currently understand it.but im an agnostic who would like to put christians and atheists in a cage and watch them fight -- i might bet some money on one or the other, but not enought money to get me in trouble.

LOL typical TWW...you get halfway through the first page of the thread and the discussion is no where near on topic, instead users are arguing over how to quote something properly.
4/26/2007 9:45:03 AM
So theoretically if we were somehow able to reach the speed of light, since time slows down or whatever, would that mean that even though it seems to us that it is taking 20 years, would it seem to the astronauts onboard the spacecraft that it is taking less time?

it'll only take seconds to get to this "new earth" once i'm finished building my teleporter we just need to send a crew over there to put a port on that planet, then we will be set. maybe it'll be the new hot vacation spot. i'm gonna open up a club...hahaha
