In the new upstairs space that's been vacant forever.

TieBreakers Bar and Grill

http://www.tie-breakers.com

They have one in Greenville currently. Anybody been there? Is it any good?

They make a big deal about being a sports bar/pool hall that is smoke free. This may suck for Sammy's. I know the food here can't be any worse.

Hrm, the beer selection at the Greenville location is pretty crappy. They are going to have to step that up to compete with other nearby bars.

i'd be most likely to check this place out during a game

but i like to drink during games, so a couple additions to that beer list would be key

I am in love with their cheese fries.

Lots of smokers still go to the one in Greenville because it's a good bar with a lot of stuff going on. They have an area set up outside for the smokers.

Mid-summer

From the N&O

Quote :
"At Mission Valley Shopping Center off Western Boulevard in Raleigh, Tie Breakers Bar & Grill has leased the space in the new building above Ba-Da Wings and Carvel. It will be the Greenville restaurant's second location and will be smoke-free. It will open mid-summer."

^we need more of those actually

and i thought that was supposed to become some small "delicacy" grocery store, along the lines of a dean & deluca... what ever happened to that

and a smoke free sports bar in NC- good luck...

being smoke-free is a pretty big draw for me. i could really care less if people smoke but i hate leaving a bar smelling like one of them. not trying to turn this into a smoking debate, just saying i think it could do well because of that.

That space is definitely going to be Tie Breakers. My brother and his best friend, who's brother-in-law owns the one in Greenville, are the one's who are opening the Raleigh location.

The one in Greenville does extremely well for a number of reasons, not just the fact that it is smoke free.

^^^ Originally it was going to be a Kroger, but they backed out before construction started, so they built a much smaller building. I think they had wanted to find a gourmet market for the upstairs space, but looks like they came up short. I wish they could have got a Trader Joe's in there.

They have both told me that they're probably not going to be identical to the one in Greenville. I wouldn't be surprised if the menu and specials are somewhat different. Anyway, one of the guys opening it is a TWWer. . .I'm sure that he'll read this thread.

yeah there is absolutely no reason 7 wings should be $7

beer selection is good enough for me, no reason to drink fancy shit at a sports bar anyway

Their menu looks mighty mighty tasty. Most of the prices are also reasonable, although the appetizers are little pricy imo (I always hate it when appetizers cost as much as a main entree). I don't smoke, but I've never make a big stink about whether or not a place allows smokers. And I could care less about their beer selection, considering I pretty much never drink.

I might go to this place at least once just to try it out.

no-smoking

I HATE HATE HATE leaving work reaking of cigarette smoke. I put my clothes directly into the laundry room when i get home after bartending.

As long as the place can have a patio or outdoor smoking area then they'll be fine.
Recent polls show that more and more people are in favor of non-smoking restaurants. Although I think NC will be one of the last states to change the law - it will happen eventually.
It happened years ago (2004 i think) in CT and I was bartending at the time and it really didn't affect business.

they'll be fine during the summer.....or maybe not, since there aren't really any sporting draws then, but people won't want to go outside to smoke when it's cold, and incidentally, when all the good sporting events are. Not saying they won't be successful, but it'll be interesting to see how economically strong the "I want to watch sports in a smoke free environment" crowd around here is.

actually the newest law, which has the most support from all groups still allows smoking in establishments that are age restricted (but gives local govs the right to be more harsh), after the total ban drew so many complaints, so I doubt a total ban will ever happen statewide.

well it was in Feb. when the ban went into effect in CT. NC really doesn't know what a cold winter is.

I think there are a lot of non-smokers who would appreciate a non-smoking sports bar.
but the location might hurt some... being so close to state and drawing so many college students.

Sammys food does suck and it's be nice to have a new place in that plaza.

I can imagine it doing VERY well. I will likely be going there semi-regularly. The lack of any such place prevents me from going out much & I know alot of other people who want a smoke-free environment too.

I recall a TWW thread a few months ago about a sports bar being smoke free and asking for people's opinion on that, what we'd like to see, etc.

and the wings say they are "ginormous"...probably doesn't mean your standard itty bitty wings and drumettes, but an actual WING and drumstick. fot that price ain't too shabby.

there isn't a total lack of smoke free sports bars.....I'm pretty sure there are a few in Cary....It's not surprising that Cary can support them, I just have my doubts about the success of one at that particular location, but it could very well be successful.

i know its cool to be a beer snob

but if you can't find something on that beer list that you people consider a tasty beverage then you got problems.

you can complain that their draft beer selection is shitty (because it is), but including bottles they have a decent beer selection.

not being a snob, not asking for anything fancy...I don't go to sports bars to get my "beer snob" on, so I'm not expecting anything ridiculous or an extensive list

just something local and decent, like some CBC pale or seasonal, or a big boss, or a duck-rabbit

I don't think I have problems, I just don't want to buy a single thing on that list...especially for the course of an entire game. I enjoy the hell out of some Bass or Red Stripe given the right situation, but this is not it.
