came and test drove it, said he wanted to buy it, agreed to get his father to co-sign the loan for him, etc...then emailed me back a couple of days later and said:

" Unfortunately I will not be able to purchase the car. I found a better
deal on one and can't pass it up. I feel that this is the better way to go.
I am sorry for the inconvenience of this. I wish you well and thank you for
everything.
"

I emailed him back and said:

"No problem.

How much is the other one going for? Is it also an '06 (Evo IX, not Evo VIII from '05 and earlier)?
"

...thinking that he'd probably found an Evo VIII from a year or two earlier for (obviously) a much lower price, and didn't realize what the difference was in what he was about to buy.

...but no:

"Im paying $5,512.88 and its a 2002 OZ Rally"

ummmm...

ok man.

asking $29,800

it's a IX with 11k miles, sun/sound/leather package, and HID.

i wasn't a huge Evo fan, either, until I drove one (that, and realized you can make 400 hp and run 11.9-12.0 for about $1300). I was really surprised by the feel and handling when I drove it...doesn't feel like a big, noseheavy sedan at all (or a hotrodded economy car, for that matter).

i don't trust that baby's mama isn't gonna take advantage of me financially (>$1000/month child support), or that I won't have to spend a lot more in legal expenses ($3000 and counting at the rate of $200/hour).

I could afford to keep it, but I'd either have very minimal extra money, or I'd have to sacrifice my investing...neither of which are attractive options. I figured I'll just sell it, and if a year down the road, I establish that I can trust her, I'll get another one (and have socked away some nice cash during that time).

^^^ never married. found out about a year and a half ago that a girl i'd dated for a few months (but was in the process of trying to create distance from) was pregnant.

we've been trying to work things out for the last few months, with mixed results. we're together now, but it's volatile and strained at the very best.

the two things i've thought about to replace it are either another 1st gen Miata ('94-97 this time, with the 1.8L), built to be a little track whore (but minus the built engine and FMII turbo setup of the last one)...or another Wrangler (TJ instead of YJ this time), built to be a pretty capable offroader (spacer lift, sway disconnects, locked front and rear, 31-32" mudders) but still a decent DD.

I'm leaning towards the Jeep, simply because I'm about to move to the NW corner of WA (Whidbey Island) for a year, and plan to do tons of skiing. Plus, it has a backseat.

i drove the everloving shit out of mine from 37k miles to 65k miles, and it'd been supercharged from 20k something miles I think. I never did manage to break anything on it.

the little door that conceals the stereo got to where it wouldn't raise itself if you tapped it, but that's no big deal.

Also, they commonly have a clunk from the rear axle nuts. a service bulletin was issued to torque them down to like 250 ft-lbs or something big like that. even then, a clunk will come from the ass end of the car sometimes if you accelerate hard in reverse (after bing in forward...or vice versa).

the rear diff is kind of a weak link if you do a lot of hard launches, but i drove mine pretty hard with an aftercooled Comptech SC kit and cat-back exhaust--and 285/35R-18 rear rubber (if i remember correctly), and never broke it. they have beefcake kits for it if you're worried.

the tranny isn't bulletproof, either, but it's pretty good. Honda advises against skipping gears.

All in all, it's a sports car by the makers of the Accord and the Civic, for better or for worse. You'll like it.

I believe there was a somewhat common problem with the tranny synchros on the 2000 models. Mine is a 2000 model, but I haven't really worried about it.

you should worry about the whole car.

i highly doubt this car was driven hard. its can handle it.. but 90% of drivers out there do not know what they are doing.

i would take it to honda and get them to do their 109238498 point inspection.

^^ Skack is right. It's on all the AP1 cars (00-02). When you test drive it, if possible, have the driver peg the throttle all the way to 8k in 1st then shift into 2nd. That'll show if the car has the dreaded "2nd gear grind". Even if so, it's not a big deal, you can live with it. Mine does it occasionally, but not enough to bother me.

^ Baonest is also right. CARFAX, Honda inspection, etc. Make sure the factory wheels are on there, or if not, check out the aftermarket wheels for it because the S2000 has really weird offsets. If it has shitty tires, try to get them to knock some off the price since tires for it are $Texas.

Duke is also right...the car is pretty damn tough. You have to do unusual things (supercharge, R compounds, etc) to even think of breaking it.

Try to get an '02 or later if possible, the glass read window is really nice. The crappy plastic one on my '00 is pretty much worthless for rear visibility.

So I had an arguement with a co-worker today. He was toutin' that the Mazada Speed mx-3 hatch was a better car than an Evo in every way. So he then sicked one of the other 'car junkie' at work on me and showed me specs on it. I gotta say, for 22k sticker price, it's not a bad car, but it doesn't beat the evo. They still didn't believe me.

So I printed off the specs of the evo and the sti for comparison and handed to him. The evo MR Beats the Mazda Speed in every sector except price. Then one of the guys said I lost the bet cause I didn't believe the Mazda Speed didn't have sports tuned suspension. I only said that the evo had a better suspension and them little rat bastards tried to twist my words around.

ms3 is fairly light and puts down reasonable power. But it kept pissing me off how bad they were defending the ms3 compared to an Evo. I was like... umm... yeah... I want to see some track time on that one. They were like "oh the ms3 beats the Evo in the quarter mile by .2 seconds", I pull the specs online and the Evo is actually 1 second quicker.

Both act like immature ricers. One has a 'modded' honda, the other has a 'modded' chevy Impala. I kept telling the Impala guy, the amount of money he "invested" in the Impala, he could have gotten an Evo for the same price and actually have a real sports sedan.

most likely those guys have never driven an AWD car...

my heavy slow ass a4 quattro outhandled(or at least I fealt more confident doing stuff in ) my RSX-S in most instances... but the type S was actually faster...

so an EVO is a tuned engine + AWD: FTW

yeah

an Evo IX would absolutely violate a MS-3 in every measure.

and then you could drop about $1200 in the Evo and crush him even more severely (like over an additional second in the 1/4)

i liked the looks (both interior and exterior) of the STi better, and it has nice power delivery (and makes great sounds while doing it)

but i drove them both, and much prefered the Evo overall. The STi felt clumsy and cumbersome compared to the Evo.

and if you want more power, the IX is very, very easy to extract a ton of power from.

i think in the end i don't want to be an engineer and look like a boy racer so i think i'm going with a legacy gt w/ turbo/fuel system upgrade and coilovers w/ big brakes.
cause the difference in price allows for ALOT of mods.

i mean... does it get any more "sleeper" than this ?

i don't think that's a really good idea.

have you ever owned a highly tuned car? i'm not saying that i won't do it again (and again), but it's a very different experience from owning a stock/mildly modified vehicle--particularly with a warranty.

furthermore, you might make it as fast through the 1/4--you might even make it as fast around a circuit--but it's never gonna be the total package that something like an Evo is.

finally, the IX is a fucking fantastic jumping off point. people are running 11.9x with turbo back exhaust, MBC, ECU reflash, and better air filter. None of that shit will impact driveability, and you can yank it all off in a couple of hours and take the car in for warranty work. People are running WAY into the 11s on the stock turbo. You have a long way to go to make a Legacy run 11s, and if you do, it won't be nearly as streetable or as dependable (and you'll probably have to pretty much put an STi drivetrain in it, or you'll break the tranny/t-case/axles/diffs). That will be a pain in the ass, and cost a pretty fair amount, and there's no reason to do it when Subaru already did it for you in the WRX STi.

Of course, then you might as well just get the Evo.

oh, and when you sell the Evo, you'll get a lot more of your money back than you will when you sell a modded-to-death Legacy GT.

don't get me wrong, i love sleepers. my turbo Miata's license plate was "ZZZZ". There's a place for tuner cars--I mean, you can't get a 1990 Miata (or any other <2200 lb sports car) with 300 hp for a price that you and I can afford by any other means. Furthermore, if you have a car like this Evo IX and don't mod it at least some, I question your judgement (except for mine, simply b/c I decided to sell it first).

Using a Legacy as your blank canvas instead of an Evo or STi is kinda silly, though.

hahaha
i've been around plenty of modded cars my whole life..
i don't really need a reliable ride to work because i walk there.
i agree the evo is the best starting point but the sti only weighs 50lbs less has the same motor down to head castings, cams, rods etc. and i'd be going with bigger brakes and coil overs anyway.
and i like the looks way way way better.
you're right on the re-sale part though and i'm not really sure how long i would keep it.

the only thing i don't like about the evo is the transverse motor.

go drive an Evo before you do any silly shit with a Legacy

or buy an STi (I really planned on buying the STi, and tried to justify it in my mind after driving both, b/c on paper, I like the Subaru better...but at the end of the day, the Evo was much more enjoyable for me to drive...and the fact that you can pull so much power out of it so easily just sealed the deal).
