I need a highly recommended surgeon...I did a search and found plenty of topics on dentist for routine care in the area. However, I only saw one post mentioning an oral surgeon. Any recommendations? Thanks a bunch![Edited on April 10, 2007 at 1:17 PM. Reason : *complete mistake by adding the "s" on surgeon for my topic heading*]

I have to get my wisdom teeth surgically removed. They are not in, however, they are still pushing against my other teeth. That is a problem because I have really straight teeth from braces and my wisdom teeth are causing everything else to move.
4/10/2007 4:42:34 PM
don't most people get their wisdom teeth surgically removed, and for the same reason?[Edited on April 10, 2007 at 5:00 PM. Reason : ]
4/10/2007 4:59:36 PM
^yes^^me too, JUST had them removed 6 months ago but they've still shifted
4/10/2007 5:01:24 PM
as previously mentioned, your dentist should be able to recommend you an oral surgeon. however, I'd highly recommend Dr. Gerald Upton - he removed my wisdom teeth a year ago (was recommended to him by my dentist), and I was eating solid foods by the second day with hardly any pain.2310 Myron DrRaleigh, North Carolina 27607Phone: (919) 782-5723

I got my wisdom teeth taken out by my dentist...what's the diff. b/w him and an oral surgeon?
4/10/2007 6:22:28 PM
Most people have impacted wisdom teeth, so it is more than just a simple extraction with local anesthetic. Are you sure they were your wisdom teeth and not some molars?

I wish I could remember who did mine. He was a UNC grad, but he did a bomb ass job despite his education. They had to knock me out for the surgery, but when I woke up my pants were still buttoned and my shirt was still tucked in!
4/10/2007 6:36:39 PM
They were definitely my wisdom teeth. I got all four out at the same time. They had already come in for the most part though so maybe my dentist did it because he was only pulling them? I thought he cut them out though. I had lots of stitches. He didn't put me to sleep though, just gave me this great little pill....

To answer the question of why not have my dentist recommend someone: I have had the same dentist for years and his practice was recently purchased. I dislike the new guy and would not trust a recommendation from him. He is also on the other end of the state limiting doctors he could recommend in this area. Thanks for the recommendations!!!

i got my out when way early, when the X-rays showed that I would have all 4....i had already gotten 4 teeth pulled for braces. Alot of people have told me they didnt put them under for it, but they did it in my case.

Dr. Kozacko (or something like that) up in N.Raleigh did mine.....recovered in less than two days (not healed, but recovered) minimal pain so I was able to save all but 1 of my pain killers...
4/13/2007 11:40:01 AM
the position of your teeth and how badly they are impacted would probably contribute more to your recovery time than the person who does it...but a good doctor never hurts
4/13/2007 11:50:37 AM
^^ Dr. Kozako did mine too. He was great! They knocked me out and I woke up asking if they had started yet. I was in no pain and had no swelling. Healed very quickly and was back to eatting normal foods within 5 days. I was eating mac and cheese the night of the surgery.

My dentist won't do the extraction I want, so he's sending me to an oral surgeon. This is not for wisdom teeth: it's for an upper molar (frontmost - first molar after the premolars). This tooth was ravaged by a cavity; it's gotten worse and worse and sooooo painful, to the point now where my dentist recommended a root canal and then either a crown or bridge afterwards. I said "no": I'm through dealing with this tooth. it's not just about cost: extraction is the simplest route, given that I have braces and we're already moving many teeth significant distances; I've also consulted with my orthodontist and she is fine with this. I cannot believe how much pain this tooth is giving me; it's been hurting for years and years. I'm just so over this damn tooth. No one yet has offered any argument at all for keeping this tooth, much less a compelling one.The name the dentist gave has an out-of-service number (upton, as mentioned above); does anyone have any experience with englehardt in garner, or j jefferson in raleigh? Those two are recommended by my orthodontist. Also, it sounds like Dana McCall might be able to do this extraction. And if my current dentist's staff keeps giving me lip and attitude like they have in the past, I was planning to switch to dr mccall anyways. So...this could be fantastic [Edited on March 1, 2010 at 12:13 PM. Reason : ds]

DR Blakey at UNC faculty practice is the best. He fixed my mouth after another oral surgeon fucked it up BAD (we are talking hygienists running out of the room to get the dentist as soon as they saw my mouth the first time). The guy that screwed my mouth and jaw up forever was on Hilton Head, SC so no worries about going to him by mistake.

Last Tuesday, I went to see Dr. Francis J. Cusumano in Garner for an impacted lower wisdom tooth. He was a referral from my dentist in Clayton but he did an excellent job. I didn't see the point in taking a $400-$500 nap so I was awake for the whole thing. He did a great job and even called me later on that day to see how I was feeling.
3/1/2010 12:47:39 PM
^^^ I like Dr. McCall. The oral surgeon he uses is also top notch.

^^, ^Thanks, yall.

im going to have to say the best oral surgeon is no oral surgeon at all. but i got the ol' wisdom teeth out in winston, @ comp rehab plaza. my dentist is there too. I can't remember any names but i dont think i'd go there if i were you. my jaw has been weird since that procedure.
3/3/2010 11:33:27 AM
Getting TMJ from wisdom teeth removal is the worst. it HURTS when I ride my bicycle in the winter and I can't enjoy chewy foods. Haven't gone to the dentist in about 5 years because that hurts too, and they tell me I'm holding my jaw in the wrong place but the "right" way hurts a lot more.
3/3/2010 11:42:57 AM
i'm pretty sure i went to dr upton (mentioned earlier, at least someone near that location). it wasn't too bad considering.

Oh. My. Goodness. Dr. McCall is THE BEST. He's personable, even if he did go to UNC. And he was fantastic. For one particular injection of numbing agent, I did have to feel it, since it was in the roof of my mouth. I have to say, it was not particularly bad (though I did turn down a 2nd dose when I was back at the office 2.5hours later.)And the extraction as a whole? Done faster than I ever imagined. He goes "Well, that went well!", and I was like "You're done?". And so it was. Then I had to go back a little later because the bleeding just wasn't stopping, and he offered to numb me up again. The kicker? He's put TVs above the chairs. You can pick movies, or TV shows, or log in to your netflix account (or his) to watch while he works. I'm gonna be sad when I can't have him as my dentist any more.[Edited on March 4, 2010 at 3:59 PM. Reason : df]

I've had work done by Dr. Kozacko and Dr. Blakey.Dr. Kozacko for a wisdom teeth extraction and Dr. Blakey for a Lefort I to correct my underbite. Obviously the Lefort is the much more advanced procedure as it involves bone grafts and titanium screws to hold my skull together and all that jazz. I definitely recall the wisdom teeth procedure a few years prior went over without issue as well. They're both very capable surgeons but it's easier to get big ticket procedures approved @ UNC Hospital since the insurance company is less likely to label it a cosemtic procedure if it's being done through the hospital/dental school.

Has anyone had Temporary Anchorage Devices put in recently? I will need someone in about 9-12months. I am sure my orthodontist will recommend someone but it's best to have another (and possibly cheaper) alternative.
