I find out this week if my car (2006 RSX-S 7600miles) is totalled or not(messed up the rear passenger side and rear suspension severely)... Most likely its fixable... I have a 3 year loan on it that I'm only 6month in on... iF it was in proper condition, what I owe would match the book value... Its at the best body shop in MD supposedly so if its going to be fixed it'll be done correctly...would this knock off 2 grand-ish typically... make it not worth selling for what I could get for it... or basically just hope for a private party that will take things into account? I'll disclose the exact damage including repair statements if needs be I'm just wondering how much I'll be able to get for it b/c I'd like to go back to school and I can't make payments on a 3 year loan if I go back...

Please allow me to adorn my helmet and finish the job properly.

the best bet would prob be to have them total it, take your loss and buy a cheap car.
4/9/2007 9:58:06 PM
You are going to knock off more than 2 grand in a wrecked but fixed vehicle. Especially with that few miles. Think like 25%-35% loss.
4/9/2007 9:59:24 PM
pics of wrecked area.my boss will probably pay you for it.
4/9/2007 10:07:06 PM
yeah, you're going to take a BIG hit on the value, especially if it was wrecked bad enough to be close to totalling. there's a chance you could find a private party buyer to give you close to what it's worth, but they're still not going to give you what a non wrecked one could be had for. why would they?i would push for it to be totalled personally. besides the value issue, a car wrecked that bad is never going to be the same, i don't care how good the repair shop is. in the event it's not totalled, you do realize insurance will compensate you for the loss in value?[Edited on April 9, 2007 at 10:11 PM. compensate me for loss in value? I never got any pictures of the damage, it took a tree right behind the passenger door and the rear passenger wheel got folded up under the car when it hit the curb at ~60
4/9/2007 10:21:26 PM
yep. i'm not sure of all the specifics, but on newer cars insurance will compensate you for the loss in value (in addition to repairing the car).

Was the accident your fault or another party? Road conditions unfavorable? Best thing is to have your insurance total the car. Specially if it wasn't your fault. Total it and get a new one. If not, you can always have them total the car and buy the car back for a lesser value then go through the salvage/rebuilt title provided its fixable.

YAr!!! Big Drunk Rob is still scratching his head wondering how we pulled that off.

insurance pays for deprieciation in value too, get a lawyer

the accident was my fault, the road conditions could have been considered less than favorable, but the accident was undeniably my fault, with no other vehicles involved on an empty road...everyone keeps saying "have insurance total it" I asked, they said it was close but they couldn't. I'll probably give them a call tommorrow... I've gotta talk to the body shop tommorrow... I hate the body shop that its at, they have strung me along forever and hardly done crap.
4/10/2007 7:20:00 PM
i was going to say if you have a good relationship with the shop they may inflate the estimate for you to help get it totalled, but it doesn't sound like you do.the insurance company is of course going to deny totalling it up front. that would cost them more money. i'm not sure exactly what your rights are, but i'm sure you have some in terms of whether it's totalled or not.
4/10/2007 7:23:21 PM
I've heard several things on the point at which the insurance company will total it... anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 the value of the car... this being a new car it pushed that value up...When the car got to the body shop it was worth $24,500 and the original damage estimate was $10,600...the estimate didn't include a catalytic converter and exhaust from engine, passenger seat (airbag at least), and they hadn't looked at the front at all...(which concerns me)...now the car is worth $22,500 and I imagine those parts + labor will take it to ~$13kishso it all depends... I dunno, it all just sucks, but considering I'm the idiot that wrecked it I can only complain so much.

car is valued at $22,800damage is ~ $15kstate farm totals at 70% damage...I feel so screwed right now.
4/11/2007 4:20:14 PM
That is weird. I know you are out of state, but I thought on nc titles you had to check the box if it had taken only 25% of the vehicles worth in a wreck.
4/11/2007 4:54:54 PM
yeah I would definitely disclose that it was wrecked if they won't total it...It really sucks b/c if they write a check for $15k thats more than I could probably ever sell it for... very shitty
4/11/2007 6:13:13 PM
go in and beat the shit out of something that isnt broken to get it up another grand or so

well that would be slightly suspicious... the thought had crossed my mind, but I don't like the concept of going to jail for fraud...
