How much trouble? How do I do it? Can I be very sure that I did it right and it is no-shit deactivated?

thinking about selling Evo and getting another 1G Miata, but if I can't carry my daughter in it in her carseat, it's not really an option.

unplug the airbag wire. most likely u will get the airbag light and the driver side wont work. or u can unplug it and use resistors to fool the system

there are several things that qualify you to legally disable an airbag and/or have a switch put in. i would certainly think that carrying your child in the front seat would be one.

duke, are you sure they don't have a switch of some sort? i was under the impression that pretty much every vehicle that has a passenger side air bag and no back seat has a switch, or at least a weight sensor in the seat.

well, i really don't want to get rid of this one, but I don't feel like I can trust baby's mama not to fuck me on child support (to the tune of $1007/month). I can make the payments on the Evo regardless, but it would put me almost paycheck-to-paycheck (with my current very aggressive levels of investing, which I don't want to compromise). I'd rather have a Miata with money to burn (and be able to afford to track it, etc) than an Evo that puts me in a box financially.



^^yeah, I called the Mazda dealer...said there is no switch until somewhere around the 2000+ model year. Also said they can't disconnect it for me, and can't tell me how.

^i'll look up the wiring diagram when i get home on alldata, but if its like everything else on the road, its disconnect the battery, wait 5 min, then unplug the bag, and it shouldnt set off the light

duke, are you just wanting to disconnect the pass. side air bag? if so

disconnect the battery.

take the glove box out and disconnect the airbag wire put glove box back on..

the connect the battery.

thats the general way.

Does it bother you that you are investing aggressively but at the same time you are losing [at least some] money every time you flip to a new loan for a different car? I mean aren't you going to be upside down slightly on the Evo?

Obviously I haven't seen the numbers, but there's the cost of taxes tags etc whenever you buy a new car, plus the depreciation, plus the fact that he bought the Evo from a dealer so he paid more than a private seller, plus the fact that he's paid higher insurance for the months that he's owned the car.

I mean obviously it's sunk cost, and maybe he got in a little over his head (at least with having a baby anyway), but changing cars every year or so in most cases is going to take a little bit of money and a decent amount of time off of you. Most people can't flip a car for more than he or she put into it, although I know some people on here have.

Those hundreds of dollars here and there can be invested and potentially make a lot more money.

I bought my supercharged S2000 for $20,000 with 37k miles, drove it for nearly 2 years, and sold it with ~65k miles for $22,000.

I replaced it with the 330ci, bought for $16,000, drove it for 4 months, and sold it for $19,000.

I bought my 2006 Evo IX with 7k miles on it (and with the sun/sound/leather package) for $26,000. Even now, with 10.5k miles on it, I bet I could sell it for $29k+. I'm SURE I could get $28k for it.

just disconnect the battery, wait 5 min, take out the glovebox and unplug the orange and blue connector, the airbag light will stay on, but the drivers side will function, or find one without a passenger side airbag, it wasnt standard, just an option pre-96

if the airbag light comes on, its not gonna deploy. but you can bypass that with a resistor. you just gotta search on different forums to see what people have done.

or you can just take the whole airbag wiring harness completely out.

although yeah, i'm looking at just getting something really cheap for the time being until/unless some time passes and I find that I can trust baby's mama not to screw me financially. Planning on either a '94-97 Miata or another Jeep (probably early TJ, like a '97-98).

I think the Jeep would be a good skiing machine, since I'm going to northwest WA in a couple of months. On the other hand, I want to be able to do some track events, and I don't really want to drive from FL to WA in a Jeep (even a TJ). Also, a 1G Miata is cheaper both to buy and operate.

^^^^ i'm really not looking for anything safe for my daughter, because I'll only be living near her for a couple more months. the situation is fucked up, but it's beyond my control.

of course, I also maintain that small sports cars are very safe--I've avoided a couple of accidents just in the couple of years I've been down here in FL that would've been SEVERE, and that I wouldn't have been able to avoid in anything other than a very agile sports car.

^^it's not that bad. I live below my means in pretty much every way, and invest like a mad dog. My car loans are at low (5.x %) interest, and I'm patient enough to buy them all at dirt cheap prices, then sell them for a (generally substantial) profit. You can't hoard away every dollar you make into investments--you'll go crazy, and won't even enjoy your money. I have over 25% of my take home pay automatically drafted each month, along with all of my bills. Sports cars are probably my biggest vice--I don't feel too bad about spending more money on them than the average Joe who's blowing even more money on something else, and not investing as much, either.

^^ My S2000 doesn't...and I know they weren't in there in the 2000-2003 S2000's. You can get the switch installed, but it costs ~$800 per side. I looked at it because I volunteer with an 8 year old kid a lot through the Big Brother program. Have to use my Civic when I take him out, no way to safely get him in the S2000 yet.

weight sensor still wouldn't do me any good in terms of letting my daughter safely ride in the car.

i don't know that I'll get a Miata, though...I might get another Jeep (or maybe an old Scout, 1st gen 4Runner, or some other drop-top 4x4 besides K5 or big Bronco)

^ how so? it turns off if the weight in the front seat is not heavy enough to be considered an adult that can saftely travel with the airbag on, hell it even has a light that comes on when it is off to tell you.
