It might not accomplish anything, but it is symbolic. They do plenty of symbolic stuff every day. No harm in it, why not?

How so? Because it doesn't actually do anything? As someone posted earlier:

It would be much more sensible to take some money and invest in improving predominantly black neighborhoods, or create a museum......anything but paying for some song and dance that does nothing for the actual betterment of anyone.

I'm really not a big fan of any of this but this latest idea is the dumbest of all.

I'm in favor of it. I wish our government would apologize for more of the stupid shit it's done in the past.

I dont see how/why all citizens should apologize for slavery. I guess next month we will be called on to apologize for the holocaust.

when I get home from work, i'll post on this, but ^ did not read the damn title correctly. It's apologizing on behalf of the state (not citizenry) and calling upon the citizenry to work towards racial reconciliation. Nowhere in there are the citizens apologizing for slavery.

^^but slavery happened in the United States, the holocaust didnt

so I guess all of us Southerners should expect some Civil War reparations from the North?

"CALLING ON ALL CITIZENS TO TAKE PART IN ACTS OF RACIAL RECONCILIATION"

That sounds alot like apologizing indirectly. IE trying to make up for bad feelings of slavery. Im asking why would ANYONE of us apologize for slavery or feel a need to make up for it. I have no guilty concerning slavery, why should people TODAY? Yes it was terrible, but there are terrible acts in the world and this country happening TODAY, that we can actually do something about. Instead we waste energy on something that happened hundreds of years ago? classic govt.

it's not reconcilliation

however i do not see any problem what-so-ever with this. it is our government offering an apology. i've never heard the majority of people on tww complain when religious people demand an apology for pissing them off somehow (chocolate jesus, discovery channel, etc.)

Im not old enough to have been witness to jim crow laws. In fact the only state sanctioned racism Ive been effected by is affirmative action. Dont get me wrong it was a horrible thing, I just dont see a point. An apology from people today that had no responsibility over what happened seems silly. NOt to mention that an apology establishes guilty which is the first step in a lawsuit.

Oh and whoever said to apologize for a chocolate jesus, while stupid, our govt isnt wasting time with an act to apologize to everyone that offended.

Que? I'm not sure which of my ancestors were here when slavery was going on. I seriously doubt any of them owned any either... Because some cock-bag owned a bunch of slaves back in the day I've got to go man up for them and apologize for their actions? Or I've got to go to a "slavery was wrong and I'm here to make sure everyone knows that I think so" protest?

Of course not, I'm just playing devil's advocate. It'd be nice if our state legislature would do something more useful with their time besides release ambiguous anti-slavery statements.

Our government? Are there currently any folks serving for N. Carolina that owns or has owned slaves?

Btw, is this "governing"?

This isn't shit but a waste of everyone's time and money. I don't pay these motherfuckers to do stupid shit like this.

if OJ apologizes to the Goldman family, are they going to be like "thank you...we forgive you"?

thats all im saying

its not expensive, maybe its a good gesture...i just think the outcome will be kind of like some rich person who is like "well i donated some old tshirts to goodwill so i am a huge humanitarian philanthropist"

thats a valid criticsm. but, even a gesture that doesnt fix anything is better than saying nothing.

It's the continued inability to get past old issues that is the problem.

Sure, many blacks of today are a few generations behind whites because we held them down for many years. But fuck, if people like Condolezza Rice and [insert any super successful black person here] are forever going to be better off than many other [insert any race here] then there is no point in rehashing old shit.

We are never ever going to get over racism as long as we all are constantly reminded of it's existence, whether it really does or not. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

^^perhaps...i just dont think the overall outcome is too much better than saying nothing...but it depends on how black people take it i guess

^^denying that there are still inequalities doesnt fix the problem either. you can argue against things like affirmative action all you want, and that is fine, but to say its been a long time and everything is hunky dory is just plain naive.

but your parents were.

seriously, this takes about five minutes of time and right now while the budget is in the house the senate doesn't have much to do. so quit bitching.

I think all Catholics should apologize for the Crusades.

And while we're at it, anyone with German descent should apologize for the Holocaust.

Oh, and all Egyptians should apologize for enslaving Jews to build the pyramids.

Any other ancient atrocities we can drag out while we're at it?

There are going to be inequalities until the end of time, thats just how it is. This would have much more force if the CSO (Coalition of Slave Owners) banded together shortly after the Civil War to issues statements and to say a certain percentage of their profits for the next 50 years were going to go to help freed slaves and their children with housing, health, education.

IS THIS GOVERNING?

DOES THIS DO ANYTHING AT ALL FOR ME AND MY LIFE?

NOT A GOD DAMN THING.

even the Anglican Church wants to do something about it. seems like a lot of people want to go ahead and deal with this.

i'd say go ahead and get the whole business over with once and for all.

if a group feels it must make reparations (as members of the Anglican Church feel), it can give out mass scholarships or participate in large scale philanthropy such as building schools and such, in areas where blacks can benefit from it the most. making cash disbursements to indivduals seems too messy of an exercise.

if they provided a bunch of funding to black colleges like one person in the charlotte.com article suggested, wouldnt that sort of be paying for more segregation?

I agree, this option has proven to do more harm than good in the past in situations where the gov't gave out money to people in order to alleviate financial stress....like most recently in New Orleans where survivors were given cash and then it all ended up in ABC store/Foot Locker cash registers...

I'm going to apologize for slavery too:

In hindsight, slavery was a dick thing to do. My bad.

There! Now I feel better and so does the black community!

\/ I was taking part in an act of racial reconciliation!
