Which sport do you think will take off in the upcoming years, and how long until we can possibly reach that kind of ranking?

This question isn't easy. A top 5 program implies that you are one of the Top 5 teams on a consistent basis. It's not as simple as finishing in the Top 5 once or twice. In football I'd say never as well. Ohio State, Michigan, SC, Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, FSU are just a handful that I would call "Top 5" programs (yes I'm aware that is more than 5). NC State will never be in that group. Can we win a title and have Top 5 finishes? Yes, sure. If WVU and Louisville can, then we certainly can as well.In basketball it would be something new to us this half century. We haven't been a legitimate Top 5 program since the 50's. We had three years in which we were in the 70s but 3 years doesn't make it. In my estimation there are a handful of teams that can legitimately claim to be a Top 5 program throughout history. UCLA, UNC, Kentucky, and Indiana. Duke capitalized on a great time to build their program up, namely the ESPN revolution so I would include them on that list now as well. The problem is that there will never be anything like the college bball on TV revolution that happened then. Luckily, we have the ACC brand and the location to recruit with the best so it is certainly possible that we can be a part of the bball elite again. One downside to right now is that the ESPN ACC lovefest that helps recruiting will almost surely be toned down now with the new multiyear exclusive deal that DisneyESPNABC signed with the Big East. Actually, IMO, with college bball the way it is NO program will be a consistent Top 5-10 team anymore, not even UNC. Too many 1/2 and dones to stay consistent. If you ask me what program has the potential to finish Top 5 in one single season first. Sid's group without a doubt. He took over a team with some pretty damn good talent (though not depth) and has shown he can recruit. If JJ Hickson stays 2 and the others stay we will DEFINITELY have Top 5 talent in '08. Does that mean we'll finish Top 5? Who knows...

^I think he just meant top 5 team. Football - never. Basketball - in a shorter time than herb was here.

In basketball next year, we could be Top 5...... in the conference
3/31/2007 11:25:31 AM
with the parity in college basketball these days, we could do some real damage next season. for serious.
3/31/2007 12:03:19 PM
Nah, not next year. If you look at all the top teams this year, they all have a good amount of NBA-ready talent. The year after we should do well.

Hickson is NBA ready, costner could lose some weight (gaining some speed) and get drafted semi-high in the first round. The rest of the guys are solid (having heard what sid said about degand's speed should ease doubts about our pt guard problem). We will compete for the ACC title next year, and depending on non-conference SOC make it to the top 5

I agree with NYNo matter what I don't think we'll ever be top 5 in football. We don't have the history to build a nationally recognized program. But as mentioned above, with the 1-2 yr players that the "no high schoolers in NBA" has created it will be hard to remain consistent in bball. However, we are much more likely to be dominant in basketball and if we were to return to the top, our basketball history, roots, and location would ascend us to top 5 status.

We need to win a couple of National Championships to be in the top 5 of eitherBasketball seems more likely since we would have basically dominate the ACC to be top 5 in football

with regards to basketball top 5:the thing is after reading this thread is that it seems like many of you expect to be #5 or better in the country within the next year or two. Granted this is a possibility (just like winning a national championship in football), but against the field I would say it is extremely unlikely.Sidney Lowe just finished his first season and yes he does have one of the better recruiting classes coming in next year, but against the entire field and expecting it to happen I would have to call that delusional.I'm not trying to bash our program in any way at all, but remain as realistic as possible. I'll be happy as hell if we can remain consistently ranked within the next couple of years.
