Question for the tech talk readers...

So I work out in RTP and need to hire an intern to work for the summer on writing some perl code... Specifically it will be for work on netflow analysis with flow-tools and also writing a tool to query bgp and dump AS and prefix info into .rrd or mysql.

I'm trying to come up with a $ per hour number for approval and thought some of you may have some insight into what would be a good pay for this internship.

Any input is valuable, thanks...

sounds like fun. are you hiring an intern with the hopes of keeping him/her or are you just trying to get somebody cheap to do some grunt work?

It can go either way really... We have hired a few of the summer interns in the past... Other interns just use it for resume / experience and move on or go back to school. We aren't heavy on programmers (mostly network guys) so it could be a permanent gig but for now it's just considered a "summer internship".

Somewhere between 15-18$ seems fair for reasonably competent undergrad interns.

How many hours per week and are hours flexible? You'll need to specify that upfront as well so both parties don't end up wasting each other's time.

Coop pay is usually $15/hr starting. So $15-$20/hr, depending on previous / demonstrated experience.

you could probably get someone as low as 12 or 13 an hour.

but, you'd get someone like me with a low gpa
