Does anybody know if there is a group or place on campus that students can go to that will help fill out tax returns? Or does anybody no of good, cheap(preferrably free) places around campus that will do them? Thanks!

do them yourself online.

You're a student, it'll probably take about 15 minutes.

You might learn something, too.

Some of the accounting students on campus participate in this program, but they already had the on campus sessions. There should be quite a few in raleigh

If your time and frustration are your biggest concerns, go to Wal-mart and pay the $texas to get it taken care of.

Well, if you are receiving finacial aid to go to school, then no it will not be included as income. In fact if you have qualified tuition and expenses that were paid by the financial aid, you can either claim an education credit or take the tuition and fees deduction. Did you get two W2s? You should of gotten one for the work study and the construction.

Are you suppose to claim yourself? If you are under age 24 and a full time student then you would have needed to provide over half of your own support to claim yourself. If you did not provide over half of your own support then your parents can still claim you, and when you file, you would need to mark box that says "claimed as a dependent."

i got one W-2 and a 1099-MISC. and im considered independent for the university so yea i guess i would claim myself. i have no parental support.

On the 1099-Misc what box has the income? Is it other income or non-employee compensation.
If it is non-employee compensation you need to file a Schedule C and you will be forced to pay self-emplyoment taxes on this income. If it is listed as other income then it would go on line 21 of the 1040 in other income.

Watch out: Scholarships and grants that exceed the cost of tuition may count as income. Federally subsidised loans that exceed the cost of tuition do not.

And ^^^ is correct, please have someone help you take the education credit if you don't know how yourself. It's Form 8863. This is important to me personally because I hate taxes and want you take as much back from the government as humanly possible.

That is correct but its not just tuition. You need to include books and fees in this as well. Please remember that these books must be bought at the University Book Store. You can not include housing.

What's wrong with it? Honestly, if the person feels like they are working 80-100 hour weeks, paying somebody else to take care of relatively minor and routine things isn't that bad of a tradeoff. Granted, if the person isn't working that much, then yes, they should take the time to learn how to do their taxes. Its all relative.

And file online FTW.

Its awful advice because you are sending them to Wal-Mart. Most Wal-Marts generally have H & R Blocks or Jackson Hewitts in them, which are terrible tax preparation companies. Most of them are way over-priced, have inadequate tax knowledge, and have horrible customer service.

So please inform of how this is not awful advice.
