disk management is the first thing i looked at

won't recognize the new HD, either

windows repair ftw...hopefully that'll work so i can back everything up before throwing the fucking thing in the dumpster

have you tried booting from a linux cd or flash drive to see if you can get into it?
or updating the drivers and bios maybe?
or praying to ancient, forbidden gods, beseeching their awesome might?

when you say it won't recognize the new drive, did you remove the old drive altogether and then put in the new drive?

and did you try system restore as [BigMan157[/user] suggested? or just Windows repair?

^^ didn't have any around didn't even think about the flash idea, but they both would have worked.

^ nah, left the old in. the original plan was to copy what i needed over to the other, not install anything on the blank. also, did botht he repair and the system restore.

what i wound up doing was just booting from the xp cd and installing it on the blank HD so i could boot into an uncorrupted os that'd recognize more than one drive Got everything copied. now just formatting the old drive so i can get everything back in working order
