Unfortunately, my parents recently had their new HDTV DLP stolen from their home as a result from burglary. I am seeking the best possible way to report this for insurance purposes. The TV was purchased from another household through some classified ads. There were no formal receipts involved or anything. So what is the best way in this situation to go about providing proof for the insurance company?

The only proof you really need is a police report, hopefully with a list of the visibly stolen items. A receipt would be great, but I don't think the average insurance company is going to demand proof that you owned a TV. If they do then maybe you know someone that took a picture of your living room before the theft? As for compensation, insurance companies do not need to know what you paid for an item, their own adjustors can figure out what something is worth. Just find out what the TV would sell for brand new today and how old it is. Your insurance company should be able to generate a compensation price based on just this information. It always sounded to me like insurance companies would pay for small items without much fuss.

Unless you parents paid cash, they should be able to produce some sort of financial evidence. I'm sure the people they bought it from might also be willing to sign a statement confirming the transaction. Just see what your folks's insurance company requires.

Pictures of it in your house are good proof that you actually owned the TV.

Oh... it's tech talk because the thing that was stolen was electronic.
