may have a job opportunity there, still in the early stages however so im not jumping to conclusions. I just wanted to know a little about the town other than the basics and wikipedia stuff. The fact that its 74% black scares me, but it seems like a pretty cool city. Let me know

Black people are everywhere, there isn't much to do, and you will be making a thread within a week of moving there bitching about it if you do choose to move there.

Alabama in general is not very nice. Some places are cool if you like the small town thing but theres only so far that can go. B'ham is an industrial city so its not very pretty or anything like that. As far as I know, there's nothing great about bham as far as things to do no matter what your tourism booklets say. haha. I'm from Alabama and hate to run it down in any sort of way but... the economy sucks.. many things that need to improve before I would move back.

I've never lived in Bham but have visited/shopped/ate there numerous times. I do know several people that did move there and were back in NC within a year- one person even moved to Charlotte

werd, I'm moving to Huntsville once I graduate for a job at NASA. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who is apprehensive about Alabama.

yikes, thanks for some of the information. Yes it would probably pay bank but it sounds like a pretty depressing place to live. I guess i'll just have to feel it out and see what the future could hold.

and 74% black people just doesn't sound pleasant to me.

Trust me, you do not want to move there, unless you can live in the Mountain Brook area, which is going to be WAY out of your price range, and even then, its almost all families. So yeah, I would really really really suggest not moving there unless you want to be bored and miserable.

i have visited birmingham a few times and actually thought it was a nice place. i guess it depends on what part of town you're in. i was visiting friends who live in a neighborhood near the top of a mountain, so i thought it was very pretty. i don't think it's the greatest place ever, but there are much worse places you can live. i wouldn't rule it out until you visit it. if you get a job offer, the company should pay for you to fly/drive down for a visit before you make your decision.

It is better than some areas of Alabama, but I don't think that's saying much.

Kinda reminds me of Durham. Their airport is tiny for a big (for alabama) city.
