and i'm still pissed off that Dumbo won the tourney MVP over Costner. I hate that the MVP automatically comes from the winning team (how ironic that when State won the 1983 championship, an NC State player was NOT the tourney MVP)Here's my analysis...Let's see.... more total points, rebounds, assists...I even calculated points/min. anticipating potential haters... Costner gets more out of his minutes... therefore...BrandOn Costner >> BrandAn Wright

Even though I agree with the holding in your analysis, you have to look at the fact that we did play one more game than UNC. Ergo, Costner should have more total points, rebounds, assists, etc... But like you said, to all the haters out there, Costner did have more points per minute. Therefore, that is the only statistic that matters.{Edit} Costner's rebounds/minute=0.13, assists/minute=0.06; Wright's rebounds/minute=0.12, assists/minute=0.02[Edited on March 13, 2007 at 12:14 PM. Reason : Costner > Wright in every aspect of the tourney.]

Without Costner we are NOT even in the championship game, without Wright they probably still would have at least made it to the championship game and probably still won it.Therefore Costner WAS the Most Valuable Player in the ACCT
3/13/2007 12:09:06 PM
even just looking at the averages, costner had more points per game, rebounds per game assists per game, etc.it can't be easy playing 4 straight games. it's impressive that costner was so consistently good during the tournament. there have been tournament MVP's off of losing teams before.

I was pissed about this on Monday, and I still am. If you take "Winky" out of the equation, UNC gets their points elsewhere. He was not that valuable to the team. Costner had a better Assist/Turnover ratio as well. The only category Wright led in was blocks. There was no legit reason for this other than the fact that he was a player from the winning team. It's interesting how the tournament MVP is not decided by actual play over the course of the tournament, but by a few points in the last 2 minutes of the Championship game. If there was a four point swing, you're telling me that all of a sudden this award goes somewhere else? It shouldn't be that way, especially when there is such a glaring difference in the caliber of teams we played versus the caliber of teams they played.
3/13/2007 12:37:59 PM
UNC also played the 9 seed, 4 seed, and 10 seed, as opposed to playing the 7 seed, 2 seed, 3 seed and top seed

Wright wasn't even the best on the team.
3/13/2007 1:32:12 PM
One other thing to note...Reyshawn Ter-me-a-new-one-pleeeease.... should be their MVP over Wright ..... After all, HE was the reason they won that game.... 8 pts (3 of 4 UNC possession) in the span of 1:30. The rest of the team wasn't doing much.
3/13/2007 1:36:10 PM
I'm sure Costner would rather take a W than a MVP.
3/13/2007 1:36:30 PM
we win that game if wright isnt in it.
3/13/2007 1:36:50 PM
We never have a chance to win that game (or any other game) if Costner isn't in it.
3/13/2007 1:41:08 PM
^ This is true until next year (hopefully, assuming Hickson fulfills his potential and gets PT)
3/13/2007 1:43:19 PM
well yeabut UNC won, and I dont think they would have without wright. You can argue the guy that enables you to win the championship is more valuable than a guy that only got you TO the championship.I cant wait for next year, after the NIT championship of course.
3/13/2007 1:43:39 PM
oh come on - you honestly think UNC doesn't have players that pick up when others don't contribute? if that was the case, they would never have made it to the finals with masky magee missing everything from the floor
3/13/2007 1:48:32 PM
The 3 that Terry hit was probably the clincher. There was still a lot of time left, but that three seemed to send us in scramble mode (next possession I think Gavin shot an air-ball).
3/13/2007 1:59:44 PM
yeah i think they need to stop calling it MVP or somethingMVP means most valuable player. to me, the most valuable player is the one player that the team can't do without.there have been years where duke and unc have had a player like that, but unc is most definitely not that way this year. there wasn't a single player on their roster they couldn't have done without for that tournament and still won. hell, brandan didn't even score in the 2nd half against us did he?engin atsur was our MVP on the season, and i think costner was clearly the mvp of the entire tournament. he carried our team through that 4 game stretch and we wouldn't have won any of the games without him. (especially not duke, uva and unc)they need to just stop referring to the award as the MVP of the tournament and treat it more like the heisman. then nobody would be surprised when players like costner get passed over.[Edited on March 13, 2007 at 2:18 PM. ^^from the game recap...
3/13/2007 2:14:55 PM
alright i see that wright did score once in the 2nd half to retake a 10 point lead with about 11:30 to go in the game. from that point on, while we were making our comeback, he didn't do a thing. he literally did nothing for about 9 minutes, then he missed a layup around the 2 minute mark. from there to the end of the game he grabbed one defensive rebound and committed a shooting foul. yeah, i really don't think they could have won without him MVP to me would mean that if you were nonexistent for an entire half then your team loses.
3/13/2007 2:19:18 PM
Yes, Costner definitely got shafted and there is no one (well maybe costner) more than me that wanted him to get it, but sadly to the winner go the spoils. Ergo, you win the tourney someone from your team gets the MVP. It's not right, but it's how it works. Also, on a related note, one of the attorney's I work for told me that there has only been 3 MVPs of the ACCT that weren't on the winning team, and the last time it happened was in 1980.
3/13/2007 2:55:03 PM
you'd be hard pressed to find a non biased UNC fan who doesnt think Costner shouldve gotten tourney MVP
