Three times this year, that I've seen for myself, UNC has shown unsportsmanlike conduct.

The game in which they played us (us, meaning me....U of Ariz) Roy kept in the starters even though they were winning by a landslide.

The Duke game (and I hate Duke....) with the Henderson elbow... I'm not saying that keeping in the starters was a justified reason, and actually I find it quite pathetic that Coach K would cite that as a reason, but for the purposes of this thread I'm including it.

And last night with the State game, and the dunk.

That's 3 times in one season, that I've personally seen where UNC has displayed bad sportsmanship. If it were one time, that's one thing, but three times? Seems like karma's gonna catch up with Roy.....

in the Atlantic Coast Conference, sportsmanship is out goal, on and off the court. Sadly, recent events have shifted focus from this goal.........The ACC; here, now and always

I loathe that ad.

^ I hated the football one, where the only time they showed NC State was "and the pain of a loss"

it's not like the duke game was a total blowout, they were only up 12 or so and there was a player at the scorer's table ready to check in for hans

My cousin plays for Penn, so I got to see them play at UNC. Of course they are going to lose, I mean they were way outmatched, but they did two things that were really unsportsmanlike:

1) The beginning of the game, about three times, they sub out the entire team for new guys (like saying look at us, we have 15 guys that we think are better than you).

2) UNC was up by about 30 with like 2 minutes to go, and ran it up to a 38 point lead just so they could break 100 points. I think Bojangles had agreed that you could use your ticket to get a free biscuit if they ever broke 100... but still, that is fucked up.

with the Rec team i coach i have done this many times

it used to be called the "blue" team where Dean would take out the starters to fuss at them or change strategies or simply coach them up

i have used it to remove a tired lineup, a lineup that is messing up, a lineup that wont listen, and for other reasons

i dont think that is bad sportsmanship at all

^^ Like I said, they did this all in the first 10 minutes of the game (not 10 minutes of the game clock, actual time I mean). No one was tired.

A decade or so ago the point of sports was to score more than your opponent. But sometime in the intervening years, society has developed this "everybody is special and there are no losers" mentality. This ain't the kiddie soccer league where everybody gets a trophy for showing up and every kid on the team gets a chance to play at least a minute.

You don't want the other team to show you up, then score more damn points than them.

Ok I can see your point, they just did it extremely fast. Then why leave your starters in until it's under a minute when you are up by 30? What lesson do you learn exactly by breaking 100 points (final score 102-64)?

If you really wanted to teach your 2nd or 3rd string a lesson you could put them in with 5 minutes on the clock and actually let them play for more than 30 seconds. If by some miracle they actually screw up and lose 15 of those points, put all the starters back in then and you can still cruise to a 20 point win.

People that have a problem with that dunk are pussies and just needed something to cry about.

God damn, I forgot it happened until I checked this site today and saw all the fuss made about it.

Fucking fagmos.

Competative scoring still has sportsmanship in it. If you have ever played on a team that beat the hell out of its opponents its not a satisfying thing to keep beating up on someone thats not as good as you. I can remember serveral times in high school sports where our team quit trying and didn't run up the score. In football were for a string of 6 straight games we were beating teams 50+ to 0 at half. So we stoped scoring and let them keep some pride. In baseball I can remember beating a team 32 to 0 in the second inning. We pulled our starting pitchers and players put in the subs and still won 40 to 1 only taking one base per hit.
I don't think everyone should feel like they won and get a trophy for being in last place but you should have enough pride and respect to allow a team to loose in good grace.

my $0.02

I was watching the game and when ty lawson realized he had enough time to dunk it, it was classless that he did. They were going to win, the reaosn there was no defense is because EVERYONE KNEW IT

scroing the dunk only proved that he HAS NO SPORTSMANSHIP.

However, Roy's comments after the game emulated classiness and sportsmanship. gave credit to sid, said both teams played great and tipped his hat to the fact that having a bunch 10 deep was a deciding factor along with the many free throws.

Personally Roy's comments overshadowed Ty Lawson's unbeiveiable ba sportsmanship. THAT should be what people are talking about, not some asine comments from people who made them in the heat of the moment on an internet message board... give me a break, find real news please thanks

^^ If thats the case then what Coach K said about the elbow incident should have stopped a one game suspension. The coach's are supposed to put a positive spin on the game. Roy also said he wasn't worried about NCSU making a run late in the game.
