i'm guessing that doesn't apply to all the unmanned border crossings. I know at some of them you are supposed to stop and fill out a little form with your name, etc and put it in a little box but no actual border guards are there.

I just crossed the border in February...you definitely don't have to have a passport to drive across. As for the original question, I'm not sure...FYI, this is what the State Department has to say:

A passport is a worthwhile investment if you don't already have one. Make an appointment with a local post office and go do it one day.
