I'd like to capture a small (5 seconds or so) clip and loop it, then convert to an avatar. I have no idea where to even start with this though. Anyone care to point me in a direction?

use screen capture software to convert the YouTube clip to a video, then then video to a gif. There might even be screen capture software to convert directly to a gif. Alternatively, you can try to pause the youtube video at the right frames, do a screen capture, and paste it in to gif software directly.
