Picked mine up yesterday. I already  it

i'm planning to buy one in 3-4months - which model did you get? - any extra accessories?
3/4/2007 11:48:59 AM
it's just a sweeper, no vacuum, right? do you still need to occasionally run the real vacuum? how big of an area can it cover?
3/4/2007 12:27:34 PM
my mom has had hers for a few years. She runs it all the time, but she has 2 dogs so there is always hair on the floor.
3/4/2007 1:32:06 PM
do you mean, she runs it all the time because there is always hair on the floor, or even though she runs it all the time, there is still hair all over the floor (i.e. it sucks)
3/4/2007 1:53:16 PM
so how well do these things really work? Does it do just as good a job as a person would or does it miss some stuff in corners and such?
3/4/2007 1:54:41 PM
My parents have one, they're great, and over time it can cover a very large area. You'd probably have to worry about the batteries running out before worrying about an area too big. I don't think they ever use a regular vacuum anymore either, it does a pretty good job.
3/4/2007 1:55:56 PM
^ don't they have models that go back "home" to recharge?
3/4/2007 2:08:24 PM
I think they all can do that, you just need to have or buy the special docking station that can broadcast to it.
3/4/2007 2:35:54 PM
i have a real vacuum cleaner. her name is isabel and she comes by once a week to vacuum. hell she even does laundry and cleans the toilets
3/4/2007 2:44:23 PM
but can she suck dick as well as the roomba?
3/4/2007 2:47:52 PM
im sure she can suck but i dont want teh herp or any other mexican diseases
3/4/2007 2:49:34 PM
advantage roomba
3/4/2007 2:53:14 PM
i have the roomba sage from BJs warehouse club or whatever its called, it has a virtual wall, the home docking station(the one that broadcasts) and a remote control. misses corners and the very edges of walls. It isn't meant to replace a real vacuum cleaner, but it makes it so you only have to do a thorough vacuuming every few weeks or so. I have a long haired cat and it did a great job of getting the hair up.the more you run the roomba the less you will eventually have to run it if that makes sense. it will take several passes to get up the hair the vacuum missed, but sooner or later it will pick up less hair because there is less hair to pick up. http://shop.bjs.com/iRobot--174--Roomba--174--Vacuuming-Robot-Household_stcVVproductId7241577VVcatId428468VVviewprod.htmits 179 at the capital blvd location.[Edited on March 4, 2007 at 3:16 PM. 3/4/2007 3:16:09 PM
My parents got one but I think they got a retarded one cause it always goes into a corner and humps the wall. My sister has the same unit and she likes it a lot. She even named it.
3/4/2007 3:55:57 PM
it's ok, but their quality is crap.there are posts all over the net about parts wearing out, i.e. batteries taking a crap before 6 mos, etc...sure there are retrofit batteries on ebay, but the company has terrible customer service.i've got a scooba and a roomba (with control module), both from costco. on shorter carpet, it's mediocre. oh god, on longer pile carpet, it's sad to watch.scooba is ok.
3/5/2007 11:49:51 AM
YEa the battery in mine is crapping out and wont hold a charge. It always dies before finishing and starts whining for me to come get it. I use it mainly in my kitchen and stuff for the doghair.

We have one of the schedulers for our downstairs which is all hardwood floors, and my wife LOVES it. It goes out from its dock every morning at 10am, vacumns the house and returns to its dock.We love our roomba.
3/5/2007 1:08:19 PM
on a similar note, my wife convinced me to shell out the $479 for a dyson. Our cleaning lady seems to like it...
3/5/2007 1:46:51 PM

3/5/2007 1:48:18 PM
dyson > everything else
3/6/2007 1:35:32 AM
^Seconded.Whenever I buy a house, im finding an aftermarket Dyson washer/dryer combo.

My parents traded their dyson for a rainbow.I hate dumping the water out of that bitch.

I've got one of the Oreck XLs (8lb vac) and a Hoover with a Hepa filter. I like the Oreck a lot, but it doesn't have any attachments for the stairs and couch.
3/6/2007 1:18:56 PM
i dont vacuum. it works out pretty well for me.
3/6/2007 1:51:05 PM
My siblings and I got my mom a Roomba for Christmas a couple years ago. As mentioned by others, it will never replace your vacuum cleaner, but it does reduce the regularity that you'll need to do it. That's how my mom uses it: she'll run the roomba regularly (on the hardwood and tile floors we have downstairs) and then do a light sweep or mop every month or so.

hey noen and crew - i know the thread title is confusing but this is about the roomba make your dyson thread if you feel a need to continue dragging that discussion out
3/6/2007 2:49:26 PM
Okay okayback on topic:Who is going to buy the new programmable open source platform Roomba thing they have come out with? It's got like 11,000 sensors and pods and bays and crap

What Consumer Reports--which I trust more than Dyson, Roomba, or Noen--has to say about Roomba and Dyson:[Edited on March 6, 2007 at 4:39 PM. Reason : ]
3/6/2007 4:38:22 PM
Yea I dont think anyone thinks or expects that a Roomba will do as well as a regular vacuum. The whole point of the Roomba is the do-a-little-a-lot versus the do-a-lot-a-little mentality of most vacuum cleaners.Sucks to see the Dyson falling away, but I guess it's good for the consumer that there are finally good (or now I suppose better) alternatives.
3/6/2007 5:22:24 PM
i have a roomba scheduler and i love itit's the pet that makes your house cleaner
3/6/2007 7:04:45 PM
blah blah Dyson get's me off....That's not what this is about. Roomba does what it's built to do. Clean up my damn dog and cat hair in between sweeps and vacuum sessions. I'm a big fan of the Roomba for that reason alone. I would sweep the kitchen everyday and /still/ have hair bunnies running around. The Roomba solved that issue. I only have one room that is carpet. Fuck a Dyson, it doesn't have shit on a Roomba + broom + swiffer.
3/6/2007 7:19:21 PM
Roomba + broom + swiffer = Broombaffer
3/6/2007 8:38:14 PM
ROOMBROOMIFFER
3/6/2007 9:47:47 PM
the roomba scares the shit out of my kid. he's also a scaredy kat. he'll be playing by himself and BAM the roomba is off to the races. i'm sure it would be ok if a majority of my house were hardwoods, but practicality is key and carpet is #1 for now.
