your employer should submit a copy of your W2 with their tax paperwork. if you dont claim it, there is a chance of an audit.

The IRS has ruined people's lives for less than that, besides your employer should have with-held taxes on the $6000 already.

how does the irs decide who to audit? is it random, or do they look for certain red flags?

First off do not go to Jackson Hewitt, thats a major mistake. I have amended too many of there returns. Second, please dont "forget" that W2 because the IRS wont. They will find out about the unreported W2, there system has become way too automated to get around that.

Also, you are knowingly breaking the law by not reporting all income. That is something you wont ever get caught doing but is it really worth the risk.

I have been caught twice trying to be lazy and not report even small dollars of income.

A year from now, you will end up paying 2k to them instead of the 1500 now, or something like that.

They will just send the automated letter in the mail to you, and thats that. It doesnt cause them extra work to send you that letter.

Just report it, and you will save yourself a whole lot of trouble in the end. BELIEVE ME!!
