I just found out that I didn't have health insurance the day I graduated (Dec) and I don't know what to do now. I have gotten a quote from Cobra (private company) for $330 a month. It just seems outrageous for a healthy person to pay that much. What did yall do? Input?

BCBS, $156

Priority #1: Get a salaried job with benefits. I think I pay ... $40 a month a month single, and it was $30 at my last job.Priority #2: Don't get hurt, maimed, or otherwise disfigured where you need to use the health insurance.Priority #3: Take some more proactive steps to understanding these things ahead of time.

Second vote for Blue Cross Blue ShieldTheres no reason why a single person your age should be paying $330 a month for health care coverage

I know why a single healthy person your age will be paying about $330/month.You are of the proper birthing age. You are at high-risk for costing the insurance company a lot of money, even being single, due to pregnancy. That's how they look at it anyway. You're going to want to find a job to help you pay for health insurance methinks.

cobra is not a "private company"it stands for "Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act"it has to do with giving benifits to former employees, retirees, spouses and dependent children
2/21/2007 11:39:50 PM
health insurance is for pussies.
2/21/2007 11:46:28 PM
my cobra was 440/month. Bastards.
2/22/2007 12:27:29 AM
330 is not great, but it could be WAAAAAAY worse, especially if you have ANY kind of history remotely related to any kind of behavioral treatment or a shitload of other very POTENTIAL complications.
2/22/2007 12:36:28 AM
COBRA is always gonna be more expensive...usually about 110%

BCBS - $175 w/ $1000 deductible (b/c the payments for $500 deductible got to be too much) (DEFINITELY the way to go )

Job helps, of course. For now, I think you'd be best to consider a high-deductible policy. They're cheaper and won't pay for the small stuff, but you'll be covered in case of something really bad happening to you.
2/22/2007 4:44:45 PM
Yea, thanks for all of the advice, I think I am going to go with BCBS.

Here's a good article that's been helpful to me in the past when I found myself without health insurance: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/InsureYourHealth/BuyYourOwnHealthPlan.aspx[Edited on February 22, 2007 at 5:47 PM. Reason : edit]

When you graduated, people should have started sending you mail about recent graduate health insurance policies. You can also google it. It is a short term policy that only covers you if you are really sick or have an accident or something, and I think it was around 30 a month. Its the best option if you plan to have a real job paying insurance within a year.
