'Dog' Loses Extradition Battle in Mexico
AP Photo

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) -- A federal court has cleared the way for TV bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman to be extradited to face charges in Mexico, court officials said.

Norma Jara, a spokeswoman for the second district court in Guadalajara, said the court rejected Chapman's injunction request, ruling there was no reason not to try him with the charge of deprivation of liberty of Mexico.

"We only just heard about the Mexican court's decision to continue with the extradition proceedings, and are still in shock," Chapman and his wife, Beth, said in a statement issued Thursday night in Honolulu.

"Our attorneys have not even been formally informed of the court's decision, as of yet," they said. "We are obviously deeply disappointed and fearful of what will happen, and are currently absorbing the news and discussing our options at this time."

Mexican authorities had already asked for Chapman's extradition from Hawaii.

Chapman's lawyers argued he would not be guaranteed a fair trial in Mexico, Jara said.

The charges against the 53-year-old star of the A&E reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter" stem from his June 2003 capture of convicted rapist Andrew Luster, the Max Factor heir, in Puerto Vallarta, 210 miles west of Guadalajara.

Chapman was arrested Sept. 14 along with his son and another associate and released on $300,000 bail. He faces up to four years in a Mexican jail if convicted.

Luster's capture shot the Honolulu-based bounty hunter to fame and led to the TV series. His disappearance set off an international manhunt by police, FBI and bounty hunters trying to recoup some of the bond money. Luster is serving a 124-year prison term.

federal agents apprehend mexican nationals in international waters on a private yacht - ok.

bounty hunter apprehends american national in puerto vallarta, which has a higher number of americans there at any given time than mexicans - not ok.

Mexico stops being a sovereign nation when a bunch of American tourists visit? I guess I missed that somehow.

he was detaining someone to bring them back to the states to be punished for some nasty stuff he did. it just blows the mexico doesnt believe that its people have to follow the laws of the US while they are there and won't cooperate with the US to bring these people back to serve trial.

Skack, when Mexico gets a respectable justice system, I'll start respecting it.

Until then, it's just an American playground...

its money baby.

the motherfucker was filthy rich and spending his inheritance in the mexican resort.

two questions:

(1) do you think the mexican Law enforcement authorities would have let some gringo "dog" come in and take their best customer?

(2) do you think that this convicted rapist might have some political pull with the mexican political/legal system

and one more,

(3) do you think that america doesnt have rich motherfuckers getting laws tailored to them?

^I'm sorry. Are you really trying to suggest that the US justice system (with all its flaws, I know) is somehow comparable to that joke in Mexico?

^ of course not. In America, we're much more subtle and sophisticated about making double standards for rich people.

On that Repo Man show with Vincent Pastore they did a segment with a repo man from Texas who would go to Mexico for cars that people were hiding. He said that if he is one of the random ~10% of cars that they stop/inspect at the border he could go to mexican jail for stealing the car he just repo'd.

Basically it's a high risk/high reward thing, probably the same shit bounty hunters have to consider when going after someone in Mexico. I'm sure Dog knew the risks when he went after the guy, so I don't really feel sorry for him now that he has to pay the consequences.

I don't think it is that serious.

Quote :
"Chapman, who is now free on $300,000 bail, faces up to four years in a Mexican jail if convicted. But his Mexican lawyer, Jorge Huerta, doubts he would get the maximum. Huerta said illegal detention is a relatively minor crime in Mexico, and that if Chapman is convicted, he would likely only have to pay a fine of several hundred dollars."

I think Mexico has bigger issues to worry about than an American coming into their country and bringing an American fugitive back to the states.
