it really depends on the local newspaper. The Washington Posts obituaries are pretty searchable, but I dont know about the local paper you are looking for. (ie. the obituaries for the paper in Bellingham, WA are not so searchable)If you dont know the actual newspaper, I would just google the city that you are looking for. The local newspaper should be one of the first couple of links that come up.

http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/archives/SC's paper with an archive dating back anywhere from '87 or '96, full articles avail to buy, and brief snippets of each one that search brings up
