My receiver is cutting off whenever I turn the volume up to a certain point and there is a lot of bass/general loud sound (like from a dvd) which I assume means its overheating or somethingbut I dont have it all that loud really, definitely not at a level that I would think would make it overheat... . I've had it for 2 years and its not top of the line or anything but its a pretty good Onkyo and its never done this before until the last 2 months or so. I have it on an open shelf and there is plenty of room for it to vent/cool off etc. Any ideas? or is it just "broke"

one of your drivers may be blown, changing the impedance, overloading the amp, thus sending your receiver in protection mode.you can disconnect each speaker one at a time and see if the amp still shuts off.. check the speaker wires.. they may have inadvertently been crossed recently. If all of that checks out fine, then your receiver needs to be serviced..I doubt it's overheating, unless the problem occurs after you've had the receiver on for a while. Most receivers have a fan that turns on if the amp is getting hot. If you hear the fan running before it shuts off, then you may have an overheating issue.[Edited on February 13, 2007 at 11:13 AM. the same thing happend to my onkyo receiver, i disconnected all the speaker wire, used compressed air to get the dust out of the vents and rewired it, it's been working fine ever since.
