Anybody have pictures of our banner? Any pictures from the season or anything like that? All these UNC jerkfaces think they're the only ACC team thats had an undefeated basketball season or something

couldn't find a picture of the banner, but found a cool articlehttp://home.carolina.rr.com/mcguires/greatest_college_basketball_game.htm
2/12/2007 1:17:20 PM
do we even have a banner? we were under probation that year, so we never even played post season.
2/12/2007 1:20:43 PM
^^
2/12/2007 1:21:33 PM
^^ yes, we have a banner.
2/12/2007 1:22:03 PM
Yeah we have a 1973 Undefeated Season 27-0 banner that hangs to the left of the 1974 NCAA Championship banner.I really like this quote:
2/12/2007 1:22:49 PM
interesting. it sucks though that we were undefeated but didnt win the NC.
2/12/2007 1:22:50 PM
^Hence some validation for the hatred by many State fans for Dean Smith.
2/12/2007 1:24:04 PM
Didn't Dean have something to do with us being on probation?I always thought Dean Smith reported a recruiting violation when we got DT....whatever it was, it was well worth it.
2/12/2007 1:25:57 PM
Yeah DT stayed the night with his older high school buddy in his dorm room on his recruiting visit. Apparently that was considered free room and board and Dean found out about it and turned us in. I just call it being smart. Heck if I'm visiting a school and a friend of mine goes there, I'm gonna try and stay at his place instead of forking money out for a hotel room.
2/12/2007 1:35:32 PM
Yes, both Dook and NCSU got probation for DT's recruitment. DT got in a pickup game at NCSU that the NCAA decided was a "tryout", even though he was already committed and everyone knew he was phenomenal. A Dook booster gave him gifts. Whoever landed DT was likely to get on probation, b/c of both how highly coveted DT was and the bizarre regulations and lack of sophistication of the NCAA at the time. The really shady stuff was from Gardner Webb. The NCAA has thick files on UNC, NCSU, and Duke's recruitment of DT, and a file twice as thick for GW.
2/12/2007 1:46:27 PM
^^I thought the staying with a friend was after he came up here 2 weeks before orientation, and he had also caught a ride with an assistant or former assistant that was driving up to Raleigh anyway (didn't pay for his own transportation).
2/12/2007 1:48:50 PM
Wasn't there also some stuff about Sloan paying for Burleson's meal plan or a bus ticket home to the mountains or something like that because he was poor?
2/12/2007 1:50:50 PM
so basically to summarize:He stayed at NC State with a buddy...free room and board. He played in a pickup game or 12 after he committed. And we gave him a ride to campus for free. And it cost us a serious chance at a national championship. And people wonder why we hate UNC.
2/12/2007 1:55:35 PM
my father-in-law has some cool stuff from the 72-73 and 73-74 seasons when he was on the team. mostly pictures and more autographed balls than you care to have.
2/12/2007 2:05:57 PM
^in that case i care to have them
2/12/2007 2:07:41 PM
2/12/2007 2:28:26 PM
was this before or after he was a cokehead?
2/12/2007 2:58:48 PM
before, and also before he was the greatest basketball player in the ACC
2/12/2007 3:00:10 PM
hahahah, I kid I kid, I know his cokehead timeline
2/12/2007 3:01:17 PM
And, in case anyone was wondering, we basically just forgot to charge him room and board for the dorm room. I think it was $4 that he was supposed to be charged.[Edited on February 12, 2007 at 3:02 PM. Reason : sss]

Read 'Skywalker'... it talks about it in there. NCAA headquarters is about 15 minutes from Manhattan, KS. Bill Gutheridge's college roomate, at the time, was one of the chief NCAA investigators for the NCAA, and oddly enough, the one that investigated NC StateAccording to Skywalker, it was a well known fact that any time this guy (the book refers to him as 'Mr. X' and doesn't give an identity) was around these parts for any reason, he'd swing by and talk to his old friend (Gutheridge). I dunno... but DT said it himself. If anyone would know what went on, it's him.
2/12/2007 3:33:50 PM
So if the NCAA puts teams on probation for players doing things that the program is unaware of when is Duke going to be on probation for Magette and USC for Bush? I mean they took away UMass' accolades, surely they would do the same to Duke and USC... -- to be honest, chances are everyone who went after him violated other rules in a big way too. I'll take the end result of having the greatest college bball player ever and a National Championship because of him in return for that 1 year of probation..[Edited on February 12, 2007 at 3:36 PM. jaybee, Deano went to KU and still has a lot of ties to the university (Larry brown and roy coached there). I realize were talking KSU, but Deano was not only a force in the 70's, but from the area.
2/12/2007 3:35:15 PM
yeah, thats what I said.. thats my whole point, almost any coach that has been around for any amount of time probably is connected in some roundabout way to just about anyone you want to try to connect them to^ hahahaha, thats the whole reason i said it to begin with, a few people give me shit about Tennessee players on here and my point was that every major program has their fuckups
2/12/2007 3:36:28 PM
it's not exactly six degrees of separation in this case though.
2/12/2007 3:37:57 PM
jaybee, using drugs for your personal use is dumb, being 100% responsible for a family's death is a bit more extreme
2/12/2007 3:42:11 PM
2/12/2007 3:52:56 PM
because of the drug use...
2/12/2007 3:52:57 PM
back to this... is this true??
2/12/2007 3:53:54 PM
2/12/2007 3:59:21 PM
The NCAA cleared all parties of wrongdoing on the driveway paving, even if it did seem suspicious...And we had a 10 year gap between the last NCAAs with Fire + Ice and our next appearance, when Jules was a frosh. We had some bad teams under Les and the first 5 years of Herb. The last year before the NCAAs, when we didn't even make the NIT, was horrible. Damien Wilkins would do 15 pump fakes, then we'd have to shove up a bad shot as the shot clock expired. Herb was nearly fired, Damien declared for the pros, Gerald ran his mouth about Herb, and Herb wouldn't let Damien back on the team (he transferred to UGA).
2/12/2007 4:08:46 PM
jesus 10 years???? thats fucking crazynot trolling at all... especially for such a place known as a bball school, thats retarded
2/12/2007 4:15:47 PM
^The University chose not to be competitive in an effort to clean up our reputation. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.[Edited on February 12, 2007 at 5:47 PM. Reason : Less.]
2/12/2007 5:45:07 PM
for 10 years?
2/12/2007 6:01:45 PM
It lasted too long. We got used to being down and started to forget. I'm only 22 so I had to do some research of my own before I learned we weren't always an underdog who won a thriller every now and then. It was Herb's departure that helped me finally realize we were supposed to be better. That we'd paid our dues, and it was time to stand back up.
